Link to the Past: Ghostbusters

“Don’t cross the streams …”

Around this time of year, many movie fans are pulling out the horror films to get a real Halloween vibe going. Spooks and scares, frights at night, etc.

However, there are some films that you can still watch around Halloween that are more in the comedy genre, but contain some element of paranormal activity or creepiness. One classic that comes to mind is the 1984 comedy Ghostbusters.

Is it scary? Depends on how young your kids are. I didn’t see the original Ghostbusters in theaters, but when I saw it on TV, it definitely had moments of fright for the young Logan. But, just like a lot of things in the 80s, Ghostbusters had a franchise boom that spawned a line of action figures, a cartoon, and of course the inevitable, but less superior, sequel. Also don’t forget Ecto Cooler, made by Hi-C.

Seriously, who didn’t love Ecto Cooler?

I had my proton pack, my trap, my toys, and got caught up in Ghostbusters mania. Another product of the 1980s that is still beloved by many adults today, who share it with their kids. And those same kids are students of mine, who recognize the beloved logo anywhere, as well as the catchy, unforgettable theme song with tagline “Who You Gonna Call?” intact.

Back to discussing the movie, the cast involved is top notch, Bill Murray, with his hilarious deadpan form of comedy, is Peter Venkman, joined by Dan Aykroyd as Ray Stanz, and Harold Ramis as Egon Spengler, three parapsychology professors who take on the role as guys who become ghost exterminators. Taking a case from New York apartment resident Dana Barrett (Sigourney Weaver) who spots something strange in her refrigerator, the boys begin to unravel clues of paranormal chaos coming to attack the big apple. The enlist the help of Winston Zeddmore (Ernie Hudson), fighting off ghosts, goblins, and even officials who believe the Ghostbusters are overstaying their welcome.

While Ghostbusters may not be your typical Halloween fare, see how many people sport the costume on on October 31st. Also, I’ve been to four comic cons, and regardless of what season I’m attending it in, a good handful of people are wearing brown jumpsuits with proton packs, and I’m not talking about toy ones. They are ones that light up and look like they’re straight out of the movie.

While I am making the argument to watch one of the best comedies of our generation may seem silly, I’m just vouching for it as a good Halloween flick; ghouls, ghosts, and even the adorable yet deadly Stay Puft Marshmallow Man makes for a fun time, especially this month.

So this Halloween I’m going to definitely make sure my dvd player has some Ghostbusters playing. Why? Cause bustin’ makes me feel good!

Happy Halloween.

  1. I watched Ghostbusters during the first week of October. I was terrified by the librarian ghost when I was a kid. And Im happy there was a shout out to the Ecto Cooler!! There is no Ann, only Zuel

  2. Not only was the movie fantastic, and the spin-off merchandise was great too, but what about THE ECTO-1!!!!! One of the most iconic movie cars, second only to the legendary Back to the Future DeLorean.

The movies were great but the Ecto-1 was my fav part of this whole franchise.
