Farewell, Michael Scott

logan j. fowler bids adieu to the world’s greatest boss …

The boss has left the building.

As Steve Carell’s character took off his body mic and made his way for Colorado to be with his fiance Holly (Amy Ryan), I was left in tears. The departure was well played out in my opinion, as the staff of the office (except for Jim and Pam) had no idea Michael was leaving a day earlier than expected. I especially felt the sincerity of the episode when Dwight and Michael had a final game of paintball in the back alley behind the office of Dunder Mifflin, and the exchanges Michael had between Pam and Jim separately.

So what will become of The Office now that its main star has left? I must admit that I took a liking to Will Ferrell’s character (D’Angelo Vickers) as Scott’s replacement, but it seems that is temporary, as it was revealed that a slew of guest stars will be appearing to take on the role of the boss. Ray Romano, James Spader, Ricky Gervais, Jim Carrey, and Will Arnett were mentioned as a possible new employee.

While I think Carrey and Spader will be a blast to see in a singular show (Romano does nothing for me), my real interest in a permanent employee would lie with Arnett or Gervais. I think the former would have more of a chance as a permanent stand in, as Gervais’ “personality” would be tamed on this show, even though the creator of the British version of the show would no doubt bring a spark to the set. Arnett, on the other hand, has busted my sides since Arrested Development.

I would take a keen interest in watching The Office more often (I was not a big follower of Season 6 or most of 7, except for the lead up to Scott’s departure) if either of the two of them were brought on.

Despite what the future holds, I must say that Michael’s send off was extremely funny and extremely sad, and it was very well done.

Adios, Mr. Scott. Thanks for the memories.
