Trailer Tuesday: Dark Knight Rises (The Teaser)

bill bodkin and logan j. fowler look at the teaser for the new Batman film …

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater.
As underwhelmed as I was for the first teaser showcasing brief clips to the conclusion of Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, I know I will be seeing this flick opening weekend. Why? Well it’s simple: Batman Begins was one of the best superhero origin films in recent memory, and The Dark Knight was a follow-up that not only shattered box office records, but was one of the best comic book movies of all time, regardless of whether it was because of Heath Ledger’s (who played the Joker), death or not. I loved both films, so I’m interested to see how it all wraps up. But with the teaser for the finale, there is not much to see, which may be a positive, as the “less is more” vibe might work for some. We barely get a glimpse of the villain, Bane (Tom Hardy), who looks to be intimidating the dark knight (Christian Bale). Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) is lying in a hospital bed, talking about how the Batman must come back, so one wonders, where did the caped crusader disappear to? Buildings are crumbling, and they are positioned in a way that when you look up at the sky, you see the Bat signal. For any viewer, the question posed is “What does it all mean?” I don’t know. But I’ll be there to find out July 2012.

As the final seconds of Dark Knight Rises teaser ended, my brain screamed, “SERIOUSLY! IS THAT IT?” I was frustrated, I wanted more. How could they give me so little? Kudos, Christopher Nolan, you’ve done it again. Like The Dark Knight and Inception before it, the teaser for Dark Knight Rises leaves us with more questions than answers. Why are we hearing a Liam Neeson voice-over — are the rumors that he’s making a cameo true? Why is Gordon seemingly dying in a hospital bed? Isn’t Cat Woman supposed to be in this movie? And can we see more of Tom Hardy as Bane? Our desire to know the answers to these questions will only further fuel the flames of excitement audiences will have over this movie. If this movie is half as good as The Dark Knight, I believe we’re in for a very enjoyable film. However, I don’t think Nolan will settle for “enjoyable” — he’s going to take us on an epic, thrill ride of a finale with exciting twists, turns and mindjobs. The Dark Knight was a true game changer, one of the most successful movies of all-time and the inspiration for the Oscars to have 10 films nominated for Best Picture. I expect nothing but greatness from Dark Knight Rises.
