10.18 – Muchmores (CMJ Official Showcase)

Choir Of Young Believers
Choir Of Young Believers is a band from Copenhagen, Denmark lead by Jannis Noya Makrigiannis. For years, Jannis moved in the underground circles of the Copenhagen indie scene. After the breakup of his old band in 2006, Jannis gathered musicians and friends around him and formed Choir of Young Believers, an orchestral-pop project marked by magisterial melodies, dark lyrical concerns, with a healthy dose of cathedral-grade reverb. The band released their sophomore album, Rhine Gold this spring on Ghostly International. The album received praise from praise from Stereogum, Rolling Stone, Spin, Under The Radar, The Guardian, Q, and many others. Pitchfork said that Rhine Gold, “is both exquisitely produced and has personality to spare.”

10.19 MERCURY LOUNGE (Paradigm Showcase)
10.20 SPIKE HILL, Brooklyn (BAEBLEMUSIC SHOWCASE)

10.16 – Le Poisson Rouge @ NZ Music Showcase
10.18 – Alphabet Lounge (CMJ Official Showcase)

Talk Normal
Since their formation in 2007, the duo of Sarah Register and Andrya Ambro have crafted a unique blend of driving noise rock. Feedback-drenched guitar tones and jarring rhythms are common in Talk Normal’s surprisingly songful tunes, producing a sound informed by their predecessors (Cocteau Twins, Velvet Underground, Laurie Anderson & Creatures), but strikingly new. They’ve shared a split 7″ with Thurston Moore, the stage with Wire, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, and Sonic Youth. Their sophomore album Sunshine is out October 23 on Joyful Noise.

10.19 – Knitting Factory (Flowerbooking CMJ Showcase)

Melbourne’s four-piece Strange Talk return to the fray with a new single, “Cast Away”, the first offering from their debut album due out early 2013. Produced by the band in Melbourne, and mixed by Tony Hoffer (The Presets, Phoenix, Beck, Temper Trap) in Los Angeles, ‘Cast Away’ is the perfect musical antidote to the end of the Australian winter. A laid-back cavalcade of synth washes, toms, layered vocals and organic instrumentation, “Cast Away” perfectly showcases Strange Talk’s ambitions to bring together futuristic soundscapes with hook-laden direct songs. Key songwriters and producers, Steve Docker and Gerard Sidhu’s influences (the pomp and clout of Queen, the dream haze of M83) are as diverse as their backgrounds (Steve a classical violinist, Gerard a club DJ). Strange Talk has already commanded airwaves and online with their previous singles”Climbing Walls”, “Eskimo Boy” and “Sexual Lifestyle”. They’ve followed this up with key performances at the likes of Falls Festival, Parklife and supports slots for the likes of Kele, Marina & The Diamonds, Foster The People, The Rapture, and Art Vs. Science.

MS MR
10/18 @ Bowery Ballroom @ 10PM
10/19 @ Public Assembly (Brooklyn Vegan showcase) @ 4PM (TBC)
After having self-released their single “Hurricane” and the accompanying popilepsy-inducing video to critical acclaim and internet buzz, they’ve spent some time with Yourstu.ly, KEXP Radio and spent their first-ever American tour this Summer with Marina & The Diamonds. Right now MS MR is ready for their Fall tour with GROUPLOVE and would like to have you immerse yourself in their Candy Bar Creep Show. In MS MR fashion, they’ve doing things a little differently – they revealed their EP completely through Tumblr. The band also posts the stems for each song, and invite people to get involved by making their own remixes (by Charli XCX, Twin Shadow, Chet Faker and Tom Vek) and submitting them back to MS MR. The band will pick their favorites and include them in the official album campaign next year.

French Horn Rebellion
10/19 – Rockwood Music Hall (Imagem Music showcase) @ 4PM
10/20 – Webster Hall Studio @ 10PM
“Orchestra Geeks Gone Wild” is their band’s mantra. “Next Jack Swing” describes the genre of their second album that they’re about to finish in the studio (New Jack Swing, but with heavy beats and funkier dance lines). The guys are a party DJ set, with improvisatory French horn over heavy beats. The Wisconsin brothers David and Robert are gearing up for a return and will play new tracks this CMJ. Their debut album had killer tracks like “Up All Night” , “This Moment” and their track with Database, “Beaches and Friends”, is still a frequent party starter. David produced MGMT’s indie release, Time to Pretend EP for New York indie Cantora Records, and with their “Up All Night” single, they scored a Record of the Week on BBC Radio 1 and an opening slot on the French Kitsuné Maison compilation series. The band also remixed the likes of Sleigh Bells, JD Samson & MEN, Two Door Cinema Club, OMD and Alex Winston. Written, produced and mixed by brothers Robert and David Perlick-Molinari, The Infinite Music… is a debut album that warps the fabric of dance, electro, rock and funk and was possibly last year’s most ambitious, multi-faceted and engaging debut album.“The album is basically the result of countless hours in the pit orchestra of operas, and thinking how fun it would be to score something like that, only with hot beats,” says Robert.

AVAN LAVA
10/17 @ Marlin Room / Webster Hall @ 1AM
Recently, the band has been featured in world renowned photographers Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin’s fashion and art videos such as Viktor and Rolf’s fragrance advertisement HERE and Nina Ricci’s ad campaign HERE. AVAN LAVA’s live show was described as “a trippy MTV Europe Music Awards performance” with energetic sing-along pop tracks and slow R&B-Prince swooners, all while the band’s moves are choreographed by TC, Sonya Tayeh (So You Think You Can Dance / Madonna), Vanessa Walters (Fischerspooner). The band is made up by singer TC and producers/musicians Le Chev and Ian Pai. Their live performances are with the help of musicians, vocalists and technicians Andrew Schneider (The Wooster Group), Drew Citron and Jo Lampert. After releasing their debut LP Ice Level, which was praised by Pitchfork as “glorious,” they’re back with a Summer tour and brand new song “Water Duct.” SPIN premiered the track calling it a “crisp, R&B-inflected soul-punk manages to groove perfectly and excite intellectually.” Ava Luna are frequently compared to fellow sound mavericks TVOTR and Dirty Projectors, as fronted by Prince and backed by Destiny’s Child. If that sounds too good to be true, quoth the Village Voice, “Ava Luna is the rare band that needs to be heard to be believed.” Having a successful tour under their belt with Twin Sister, the band hits the road for a month of Summer dates.
