If you feel that rock ‘n’ roll, in particular heavy metal, has sucked since roughly 1981, then it is of the utmost importance that you listen to Crobot’s Legend of the Spaceborne Killer.
Now this might seem like a bit of a left handed compliment, but we mean this with 100% sincerity. Crobot, the Pennsylvania-based hard rock band that we first discovered when they rolled into Asbury Park earlier this year, is an absolutely beautiful band. They have this amazing swagger, sense of melody and freewheeling rock ‘n’ roll bombasticness that has been vacant from the metal scene since bellbottoms and muttonchops weren’t cool anymore.
Crobot’s sound is a fusion of that wonderfully hazy and fuzzy stoner metal that Corrosion of Conformity and Kyuss produced in the early 90s and that epic, grandiose throwback metal that Wolfmother and The Darkness presented to the masses in the early 00s. This fusion evokes sounds that would’ve been on the Heavy Metal soundtrack or if the band was opening for Ozzy-fronted Sabbath.
What makes the band really stand-out is the lead vocals of Brandon Yeagley. The dude has this wailing style of singing that’s just so melodic yet so metal. It’s a quality that current metalheads, who were raised during the 80s, you know the era when frontmen could sing, can not only appreciate, but really feel in the depths of your soul. It’s brilliant.

If you’re looking for the track download off this record — let me preface this recommendation by saying this an album you should listen to from beginning to end, it’s that good. It’s just a breath of fresh heavy metal air. However, the best track on the record, the one that really gets to the heart of what Crobot is all about is the title track. It’s pure rock fury, guitar solos that’ll melt your face off, a driving bass line that just motors, a drum line that’s like shotgun blasts against a brick wall and of course Yeagley’s soaring vocals. Man, it’s just that good.
So fans of metal, fans of rock ‘n’ roll remember the name Crobot, they are primed for greatness.
