Season two of Nashville begins with everyone’s life in complete disarray. But then again, what’s new? Season one of Nashville was a whirlwind of drama, at times escalating to the point of comedy. But this is Nashville, right? So it’s not really about the people, it’s about the music. And the music makes it all forgivable.

After Rayna (Connie Britton) and Deacon’s (Charles Esten) horrible car accident, Rayna is in a coma and Deacon is in prison, awaiting a sentence. Apparently he told the police that he was driving under the influence. Because finding out he’s a father has driven him to such a self-destructive state that we would prefer to rot in jail, possibly charged with involuntary manslaughter, until he hates himself enough to hang himself by his belt, I assume.

We find out that Scarlett (Clare Bowen) has turned down Gunnar’s (Sam Palladio) proposal, which is smart of her, because it was out of nowhere and right after he was done being a huge tool. But I don’t want them to be broken up, WTF show?? In my opinion, Scarlett and Gunnar are not only the most interesting thing happening on Nashville at all times, but also produce the best music. I want them, the actors, to be a real musical duo, because hot damn they are incredible. One of the biggest mistakes the show has made is to have Scarlett receive a solo record deal. I am skeptical that this plotline will work out favorably. In fact, it wasn’t until close to the end of the episode when the two performed together at Scarlett’s going away party that the episode really came together for me.

Last season Teddy (Eric Close) also learned of Peggy’s (Kimberly Williams-Paisley) pregnancy. But now, with Rayna in a coma, he’s decided he doesn’t love Peggy, I guess? He was a huge dick to her and very coldly told her he would supposed her financially. Then she had a miscarriage. Then she sought out Teddy just to tell him she… heard the baby’s heartbeat. This is some of that drama that’s practically comedy I was talking about. Hilarious, amirite?

Juliette (Hayden Panettiere) was kind of all over the place in this episode. First she used Rayna’s coma to make it all about her, “paying tribute” by performing a flashy Rayna Jaymes song and inviting all her fans to come to the hospital afterward. But when she ran into Rayna’s daughter Maddie at the hospital her tone changed completely and she was a fucking sweetheart. She is kind of that way, though. You never know if you’re going to get crazy bitch Juliette or sweet, down-to-Earth Juliette. And I’m okay with that. I know people like that.

The premiere ended with Rayna coming out of her coma, basically fine, and Deacon being let go because she confirmed that it was actually her driving the car.

Basically Season two promises to be the same good old Nashville we grew to love in season one. Fun, full of great music, over dramatic at times, and very sexy. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
