TV Recap: American Horror Story: Coven, Premiere

I just want to begin by saying that these past few weeks of sneak peeks and commercials have had me salivating. The Salem Witch Trials have always been an interest of mine and I recently found that I was related to Reverend Hale of the trials. After seeing what they could do with a haunted house and an asylum, American Horror Story: Coven couldn’t possibly be anything but amazing.

The series premiere, called Bitchcraft, begins with Madame Delphine LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) who is a wealthy slave owner in New Orleans with three daughters. When one of them is caught having sex with one of the slaves, the slave is taken to a room with the rest of her “collection,” revealing LaLaurie’s disturbing hobby. She tortures, kills and bleeds them out so she can cover her skin in their blood to keep herself young.

Moving to modern day, Taissa Farmiga plays Zoe, a teenager who cannot have sex without killing her partner. She discovers her powers of witchcraft during the unfortunate death of a boyfriend and is sent to an all-girls boarding school for young witches called Miss Robichaux’s Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies. These witches are all directly related to a witch from the Salem Witch Trial days that fled to New Orleans to escape being caught.

Each girl at the school has a special power. Emma Roberts plays Madison Montgomery, a washed up actress with anger issues and telekinesis. I would not recommend pissing her off.

Gabourey Sidibe plays Queenie, who is a human voodoo doll. Anything she does to herself happens to another person of her choosing.

Jamie Brewer is Nan, a Downs Syndrome girl who is clairvoyant. She knows the truth behind every lie you tell.

Jessica Lange is Fiona Goode, the Supreme Witch. This means that she is the one witch with every power a witch could have. She is the most powerful witch of her generation. Fiona is also a substance abuser with the fear of growing old and is willing to do anything and hurt anyone to regain her youth.

Goode has returned to New Orleans to Miss Robichaux’s where her daughter, headmistress Cordelia Foxx, played by Sara Paulson, teaches the girls how to control their powers to keep them safe from those that might harm a witch. What Goode’s agenda is, we aren’t completely sure, but it is safe to assume that she is up to no good.

While the premiere was not as strong as those previously, there was enough shown to ensure that this season will be no less disturbing than the others. I, personally, cannot wait to see what Bates and Lange can accomplish together against the likes of Angela Bassett, a voodoo priestess who appears to be this season’s antagonist.

We have no way of knowing exactly what darkness is in store for us this season, but I, for one, will be waiting with baited breath.
