Notable Openings This Weekend: Carrie, The Escape Plan, The Fifth Estate

Oh my goodness, gracious! There’s a remake of a popular horror movie coming out? Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger are in a film together?!? O…M…F…G. Wow, I wonder which one is going to win?! Yeeeeah, it’s going to be neither. Gravity will rank #1 for the third week in a row, so let’s just get this over with.

Escape-Plan-Poster1

Let’s talk about Carrie first. I don’t have a problem with remaking films, but when your movie looks exactly the same as its predecessor with different actors and updated fashion, is it really necessary? I know Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore are good actresses, but come on. Yeah, yeah, Hollywood’s a business, and there’s been a couple recent successes of this working like Evil Dead and Friday the 13th, so I get it. I don’t believe Carrie will be one of these successes however. The trailers look identical to the original, and Carrie is very much in that “It’s such a classic” category that I think this ends up turning many people away.

Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger are icons. I love them as much as the next guy, but seriously, these guys are almost 70 years old…70!? Enough with the action films! Can’t we just remember their classics and move on? If these guys aren’t in an Expendables movie, their box office draw is non-existent. Stallone’s last solo outing (Bullet to the Head) opened under $5 Million opening weekend, and Schwarzenegger’s The Last Stand barely did over $6 Million.

The other major opening is The Fifth Estate. Analysis: Nobody cares.

How Will It All Break Down…

Machete Kills and Runner Runner make miraculous box office come backs to finish 1 & 2 respectfully…just kidding. Continued positive word of mouth, and a bunch of really annoying people saying “Oh, you just have to see it in IMAX 3D” will continue to hold Gravity strong at #1. Captain Phillips barely holds off a disappointing Carrie.

TOP 5 BOX OFFICE PREDICITONS

1. Gravity — $34 Million
2. Captain Phillips — $16.5 Million
3. Carrie — $16 Million
4. Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 — $9.5 Million
5. The Escape Plan — $9 Million
