TV Recap: Scandal, ‘Everything’s Coming Up Mellie’

Wow. Okay. Wow.

I’m feeling a lot of emotions about this episode of Scandal. The first one being that the episode title, “Everything’s Coming Up Mellie” is beyond distasteful. There’s no way that pun was unintentional, and it makes light of a situation that is very serious.

Those feelings aside, I was beyond glued to my TV screen during the latest installment of Scandal which focused on how Mellie became the Mellie (Bellamy Young) we know and love to hate. It was interesting to see Mellie and Fitz (Tony Goldwyn) so head over heels for each other, and what eventually drove them apart. There is a lot of controversy over Mellie’s rape, committed by her father-in-law, which is covered very well in this Jezebel article. I personally feel the events that transpired made a lot of sense for her character. She didn’t want to talk about the rape, so she used it as leverage to get her husband to run for governor. I’m sure she didn’t feel good about it at the time, but sometimes when a person is very wronged, it takes a while for them to really realize just how despicable a person has been to them. This back story gave me a very clear picture of why Mellie doesn’t trust anyone and why she always feels she has to take matters into her own hands to get anything done.

Many people have said that it was a cheap shot at trying to gain sympathy points for Mellie, and maybe I don’t feel that way because I’ve always had sympathy for Mellie. He husband cheats on her and makes a fool of her. When his mistress isn’t in play, he comes back and leans on her. When he’s in a bad mood, he takes in out on her. Mellie is manipulative and a ball buster, sure. But she’s also a human woman with feelings, who kicks ass despite her dying marriage and having to always be in the public eye.

But Mellie’s rape scene wasn’t the only crazy thing that happened this episode. Can we lighten up the mood a little and talk about how much I LOL’d at young Cyrus’s (Jeff Perry) hideous facial hair, and the fact that he casually mentioned his wife?? That was amazing.

And Quinn. Poor Quinn. Doesn’t that girl know when she’s being manipulated? We knew from last week that Charlie had plans for Quinn, and I was pretty sure those plans were to induct her into B613. Damn, that super secret spy sector be tricksy. I feel really bad for the girl, though. I love Quinn. Not so long ago she was lost and innocent.

But the biggest revelation of the episode is that Olivia’s mother is still alive. Revealed in the very last second that her dad has been hiding her mom away in a prison under a false identity. I’m inclined to believe that he devised the entire plane crash plan because her mom was in danger. But it’s a great mystery, I’m interested to see how it unfolds.

Harrison, of course, did nothing this week.

Monologue of the Week: Mellie’s masterful dig at Fitz about how she’s so sick of being the one that gets everything done on her own. Poignant in tangent with the flashbacks. I’m also 100% positive Bellamy Young was put on this earth to monologue.
