Pop-Ed: Golden Globe Reactions (Television)

Pop-Break.com’s television editor, Luke Kalamar, reacts to last night’s slew of winners, losers and out of nowhere upsets.

Best Television Series – Drama: Breaking Bad (AMC), Downton Abbey (PBS), The Good Wife (CBS), House of Cards (Netflix), Masters of Sex (Showtime)

Winner: Breaking Bad

Reaction: This came up right after the Actor award so Bryan Cranston should have brought a chair up on stage with him. Breaking Bad was by far the best show of 2013 so this was a complete no brainer. As Aaron Paul himself said, “Yeah bitch!”

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama: Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife (CBS), Tatiana Maslany, Orphan Black (BBC America), Taylor Schilling, Orange is the New Black (Netflix), Kerry Washington, Scandal (ABC), Robin Wright, House of Cards (Netflix)

Winner: Robin Wright, House of Cards

Reaction: I chose Kerry Washington, Bill chose Taylor Schilling, and Robin Wright won. Am I okay with that? Absolutely! Have you seen her in House of Cards? Beyond incredible. The talent here was off the charts so it says a lot about Wright that she was able to take this award home.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Drama: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad (AMC), Liev Schreiber, Ray Donovan (Showtime), Michael Sheen, Masters of Sex (Showtime), Kevin Spacey, House of Cards (Netflix), James Spader, The Blacklist (NBC)

Winner: Bryan Cranston, Breaking Bad

Reaction: What a shock! Well, not really. 100% the right decision. Consider this a prequel to what the Emmy’s will be like later this year.

Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical: The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox), Girls (HBO), Modern Family (ABC), Parks and Recreation (NBC)

Winner: Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Reaction: Ladies and gentleman, Brooklyn Nine-Nine!! I picked Modern Family and Bill picked Girls because both are critical darlings (and likely winners) but a freshman comedy winning this is a major upset. Now before furious fans of other shows set the internet aflame remember this: Girls also won for its first season only one year ago. This is almost customary for the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) by this point. With that said, Brooklyn Nine-Nine is an incredible show. I’m shocked that it actually won, but I’m glad it did.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical: Zooey Deschanel, New Girl (Fox), Lena Dunham, Girls (HBO), Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie (Showtime), Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Veep (HBO), Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation (NBC).

Winner: Amy Poehler, Parks and Recreation

Reaction: YES! FINALLY! Amy Poehler is the winner we all know she deserves to be. I know I picked Julia Louis-Dreyfus but this is seriously better. A lot better.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Comedy or Musical: Jason Bateman, Arrested Development (Netflix), Don Cheadle, House of Lies (Showtime), Michael J. Fox, The Michael J. Fox Show (NBC), Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine (Fox)

Winner: Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine

Reaction: Never in a million years did I expect Andy Samberg to win an award like this. Apparently the internet didn’t either, as you either love this choice or hate it with the fiery passion of 1,000 suns. Samberg and Brooklyn Nine-Nine winning were easily the biggest shocks of the night. Beating out past winners Jim Parsons, Don Cheadle, fan favorite Jason Bateman, and legendary actor Michael J. Fox is a HUGE deal. The HFPA has been known in the past to choose upsets and this is a prime example. But Samberg is incredible in Brooklyn Nine-Nine and a big part of me is very happy he won.

Best Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television: American Horror Story: Coven (FX), Behind the Candelabra (HBO), Dancing on the Edge (Starz), Top of the Lake (Sundance), The White Queen (Starz)

Winner: Behind the Candelabra

Reaction: This won the Emmy last year and has received universal acclaim. I called this, Bill called this, everyone and their mother called this. Basically, this wasn’t a surprise at all.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television: Helena Bonham Carter, Burton & Taylor (BBC), Rebecca Ferguson, The White Queen (Starz), Jessica Lange, American Horror Story: Coven (FX), Helen Mirren, Phil Spector (HBO), Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake (Sundance)

Winner: Elisabeth Moss, Top of the Lake

Reaction: Finally! Elisabeth Moss has won an award! She has been nominated consistently for both the Globes and the Emmy’s for Mad Men but was never a winner. This was her time. Considering her immense talent, her win tonight makes perfect sense.

Best Performance by an Actor in a Mini-Series or Motion Picture Made for Television: Matt Damon, Behind the Candelabra (HBO), Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra (HBO), Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing on the Edge (Starz), Idris Elba, Luther (BBC America), Al Pacino, Phil Spector (HBO)

Winner: Michael Douglas, Behind the Candelabra

Reaction: Douglas won an Emmy for this role so this was hardly a shock. The men in this category are all incredible actors but Douglas has clearly dominated as Liberace. You could have seen this win from space.

Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television: Jacqueline Bisset, Dancing on the Edge (Starz), Janet McTeer, The White Queen (Starz), Hayden Panettiere, Nashville (ABC), Monica Potter, Parenthood (NBC), Sofia Vergara, Modern Family (ABC)

Winner: Jacqueline Bisset, Dancing on the Edge

Reaction: I chose Sofia Vergara but I honestly had very little experience with any of these programs. From what I’ve read Jacqueline Bisset did a phenomenal job so she’s definitely a deserving winner. I’m sure critics will have different things to say about her incredibly awkward acceptance speech though…

Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Mini-Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television: Josh Charles, The Good Wife (CBS), Rob Lowe, Behind the Candelabra (HBO), Aaron Paul, Breaking Bad (AMC), Corey Stoll, House of Cards (Netflix), Jon Voight, Ray Donovan (Showtime)

Winner: Jon Voight, Ray Donovan

Reaction: WHAT?! This was the first shock of the night for me. Considering how outstanding Aaron Paul was as Jesse Pinkman, I pegged him to be the big winner. Voight pulling the rug out from underneath him is a major surprise. I’ve never seen Ray Donovan but Voight winning over Paul gives me more of a reason to check it out. My prediction still stands that Paul will win the Emmy this year though.
