TV Recap: American Horror Story: Coven, ‘Protect the Coven’

Kathy Bates is back! I’m sorry but I can barely contain my excitement at her return. I don’t think I ever realized how much better this season of American Horror Story: Coven is with her in it. Not only does she provide much needed comic relief, she has her Misery moments of insanity that really only she could pull off.

My Bates obsession aside, this week’s episode, “Protect the Coven,” is pretty solid. We are starting to get answers to certain questions and characters that have never served a large purpose are starting to step up. With only two episodes left after tonight, the ending is still pretty hard to piece together. I believe we are in for a massive twist and one hell of an ending.

This week, a character previously thought dead returns to the coven with new powers. Yet again, another person is in line for Supreme.

Madame LaLaurie (Kathy Bates) has returned in one piece. She resumes her role as maid, much to her dismay, and to some other roles she has served in the past. She serves the coven a pretty brilliant dinner a la The Help and makes an unexpected ally with someone in the house. We also get to learn how she turned Elizabeth Bathory on her slaves.

Madison (Emma Roberts) is still bent out of shape over Kyle’s (Evan Peters) loyalty to Zoe (Taissa Farmiga). As women do, Madison blames Zoe for it all, putting Zoe in her crosshairs.

Cordelia (Sarah Paulson) is still struggling with her lack of powers and ability to contribute to the safety of the coven. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

Zoe receives a strange gift and request from Myrtle Snow (Frances Conroy). To fulfill the request would change everything.

Fiona (Jessica Lange) and Marie Laveau (Angela Bassett) have an interesting meeting with Harrison Renard (Michael Cristofer) over the war between coven and hunters. An uninvited guest brings about a change.

Again, I am really excited for the return of Kathy Bates and of certain other characters that I cannot name without spoiling things for you. What I will say is that these returning characters will most certainly contribute to the thriving of the coven and, hopefully, an amazing ending to the season.
