TV Recap: Suburgatory, Season 3 Premiere

Suburgatory Poster Season 2

I have to admit, I was a little nervous about what would become of Suburgatory in its third season. This is one of my favorite shows. The writers have built such a unique world in the town of Chatswin, and the show really hit its stride in season two, with each episode becoming more and more gut wrenchingly hilarious. But sadly, like most things I love, it does have a bit of a cult following, and so it doesn’t get the ratings it deserves.

I was heart broken at the end of season two when it was announced that due to budget cuts we would be losing a few characters, specifically Alan Tudyk and Rex Lee. And even sadder to learn that Parker Young’s new sitcom Enlisted was picked up by Fox, because I really couldn’t imagine Suburgatory with out the indescribable Ryan Shay. He’s adopted! (Although you really should check out Enlisted because Young is great in it and so is my future husband Chris Lowell).

But seriously, HOT DAMN, Suburgatory. This episode proved that this show can keep our attention and give us some solid material no matter what characters are in the mix.

One of the things I’ve always loved about this show is that on top of its crazy weird humor and perfect comedic timing, it has this incredible ability to get you right in the gut. Tessa’s relationship with her mom and grandma are just these huge sources of character conflict. They always bring it into perspective on who Tessa really is as a character and why she’s kind of guarded. Not two minutes into this episode I was crying like a tiny little baby because Tessa’s mom left her again. SUCH A MOMENT. SO MANY FEELS.

In addition, getting rid of a few characters actually allowed some of the other ones to shine. They were all already shining, for sure, but I’m just saying — Having so many people in the mix kind of pulled focus. I actually think the casting cut might make the current characters relationships stronger. It certainly felt that way in this episode, and I really hope that continues.

I’m just happy to have my weird ass comedy back on TV. I’m looking forward to what this season has to bring. And hopefully we’ll get some Parker Young guest spots!

  1. Hey. So what’s the point of a write-up like this? You’re just sharing your feelings and attempting (and not really succeeding) at being funny, and that’s not how criticism or a review works. It feels like you;re having a tea party and talking to all of your stuffed animals, because if this is a review that’s supposed to communicate whether or not we should or shouldn’t watch this, it’s about as effecting as a C+-rated freshman college assignment. Also, check your grammar! “it’s” and “its” are different!
