TV Review: American Horror Story: Coven, ‘The Seven Wonders’ (Season Finale)

I can’t believe it’s over. Coven has quite possibly been my favorite season of American Horror Story. Maybe I am biased because I have a soft spot for witches, but this has been one brutal and bloody season. After tonight, it’s back to waiting for another brilliant season to be tossed our way.

That’s after tonight.

Tonight, American Horror Story: Coven goes out with a bang with season three’s last episode, “The Seven Wonders.”

If I really think about it, all signs have pointed to the identity of the new Supreme. There are a few that it could be, a few that it should be, and one that it should definitely not be. Who it is, you will find out soon enough.

No Glenn Close tonight. Despite the rumors and the mild confirmation on IMDb, she did not appear. However, there was a slightly less Glee-like appearance by Ms. Stevie Nicks, once again gracing us with a song or two. One of those songs was in a montage. You know you love a good montage.

Let’s break down tonight’s episode. As usual, this is spoiler free so I can’t say too much as there are plenty of surprises in store!

The four remaining witches, Zoe (Taissa Farmiga), Madison (Emma Roberts), Queenie (Gabourey Sidibe) and Misty Day (Lily Rabe) must compete in The Seven Wonders to see who will reign supreme.

The Seven Wonders are as such:

1. Telekinesis- the ability to move objects with your mind
2. Concilium- the ability of mind control
3. Descensum- the ability to descend into Hell and back
4. Transmutation- the ability to transport yourself from one place to another
5. Pyro kinesis- the ability to start fire with your mind
6. Divination- the ability to read objects
7. Vitalum Vitalia- the ability to restore life

All seven must be performed perfectly in order to win the crown. Tonight, as you know, we find our new Supreme.

Five witches will die. You read that correctly. Five witches will die. I would like to say I am shocked but we knew this time would come. A lot of people always die at the end of each season of American Horror Story.

There really is no way to say more without spoiling something, so this is it. Some of you will be very happy with how it ends. Others may not like it so much. Personally, I am happy with it. It was a strangely light note to end such a dark season on, but still a fantastic ending to an amazing show.
