TV Review: Hannibal, Season 2 Premiere

If you haven’t tuned in to Hannibal yet, for the love of everything in the universe, do yourself a favor and hop on this bandwagon before it leaves the station forever. Last season Hannibal, the latest piece of genius from creator Bryan Fuller (Pushing Daisies, Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me), aired as a mid-season replacement to mediocre ratings but a ridiculous onslaught of rave reviews. So what caused the low ratings? They chose to air this piece of brilliance in a time slot it would never get noticed: Thursdays at 10pm against ABC’s Scandal.

We waited with baited breath… and waited… and waited. And finally NBC announced that it would be bringing Hannibal back for a second season. As a mid-season replacement. And when would it be airing this February? Well, everyone’s favorite time to watch television, of course! Fridays at 10pm! WOO!

I will never understand the philosophy television execs use. When a show is as brilliant, with as beautiful of an aesthetic, and an already built-in cult fanbase from previous shows by the same creator, as Hannibal is – why renew it and give it the worst chances you could possibly give it? Why even renew it at all? Clearly if a show doesn’t do well Thursdays at 10pm, it’s not going to do any better Fridays at 10pm. What’s the point?

It’s really a shame, because if this season two opener told me anything about what’s in store for this series, we are all going to be screaming at the end, begging for there to be more. I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Will Graham (Hugh Dancy) is the most tragic character on television. To be able to make a statement like that means there is something special in this writing.

If you love dynamic characters, suspense that will have you constantly on the edge of your seat, incredibly cinematography, and looking at Hugh Dancy’s pretty face, then this show will wow you, and I urge you to tune in and keep it from going to television heaven.

So basically if you’re not sure how I feel about Hannibal yet, I like really, really love it you guys. And I just think it deserves a chance. Because sometimes when shows I’m this obsessed with get cancelled, I have nervous breakdowns. And you guys don’t want me to have a nervous breakdown, right?

I hear some mixed reviews from the crowd, and even one person who yelled, “That would be hilarious!” But I want to give a special thank you those of you who said, “Of course not.”

And now I will exit this review gracefully. Thank you and goodnight.
