Notable Openings This Weekend: Bad Words, Noah, Sabotage

Controversy! Religion! Visual Epic! Russell Crowe! Hermione! This weekend is about one thing, and one thing only – Noah, Darren Aronofsky’s latest opus. But before we jump into Mr. Aronofsky’s latest “upper” of a film, we got two other wide release movies to analyze and pick apart as well. Get ready for spelling bees, aging action stars, and a really big rain storm. Could you ask for a better box office this weekend?

First off, we got Arnold Schwarzenegger’s latest, Sabotage. Can you believe Schwarzenegger is 66 years old? Yeah. Let that sink in, folks. Batman & Robin seems like it was only yesterday. I’m going to make this short and sweet – Sabotage will tank. Arnold Schwarzenegger is an icon, and will always be an icon. When he leaves this Earth, we’ll always remember Terminator, Predator, Commando, and all the rest. But people, his last two starring roles (The Last Stand, Escape Plan) absolutely bombed, failing to reach $10 Million opening weekend. We live in a different time where superstars and names don’t necessarily open films anymore. I love you Arnold, but you’re in for another bad opening weekend.

Expanding in wide release this weekend is Jason Bateman’s directorial debut, Bad Words, about a grown man who competes in spelling bees. Don’t expect much box office here as it doesn’t open in too many theaters.

But enough about movies that have barely been advertised – let’s get to the big gun. Darren Aronofsky’s last film was the brilliant Black Swan back in 2010. It cleaned up. Aside from Aronofsky’s legion of fans, whether you are a religious fanatic or not, you are going to see this film. There’s no denying it. You either think it looks epic as hell, or you want to go just so you can complain about it later – either way, this movie is going to make BIG BUCKS this weekend.

How Will It All Break Down…

Noah destroys. Divergent gets second place, but has a huge drop off. The people who really wanted to see it, saw it.

1) Noah — $44 Million
2) Divergent — $26 Million
