Notable Openings This Weekend: Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return, Moms’ Night Out, Neighbors

While Neighbors is the big man on campus this weekend, the more interesting question might be how much The Amazing Spider-Man 2 is going to drop? Talk about a film that has been ravaged and ripped apart like rats attacking a block of cheese. Wow. It’s a superhero film, so of course its either the “greatest movie ever made,” or “the worst film since Batman & Robin.” Whatever. It’s crazy to think a near $92 Million opening weekend is considered “eh,” but judging from the budget and marketing, it should have been better. Superhero movies make their box office when fans want to go back again and again, but they won’t for this one. But enough about Spidey – let’s get into the new stuff.

I laughed Neighbors off when I first read about it, and while it’s not my cup of tea, there’s been plenty of good buzz. They are pushing the “from the guys who brought you This is the End” angle pretty hard, and that will surely draw some folks in. Much to my chagrin, Seth Rogen has his audience, so this should do very well, but nothing earth shattering.

I haven’t seen one piece of marketing for Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return. I would think an animated movie about the world of Wizard of Oz would conjure up some interest, but it’s a ghost town. My guess is this was supposed to be a big summer movie, but the studio probably thought it was atrocious, and now it’s getting swept under the rug. It’s still a kid’s movie, and there’s nothing else going on, so it should do passable business. I guess the main actress from Glee voices Dorothy. Glee? Is that thing still on? Ugh.

Finally, we have Moms’ Night Out, which could be the surprise of the summer, as in “surprise,” this movie exists. With no notable stars, don’t expect much, except maybe a top five appearance.

How Will It All Break Down…

While The Amazing Spider-Man 2 sinks like a stone, it saves a little face and finishes #1, barely ahead of Neighbors for a tight weekend box office battle.
