Bold Box Office Predictions: June 13-15

Notable Openings This Weekend: 22 Jump Street, How to Train Your Dragon 2

You may have noticed I didn’t do box office predictions last week. I was actually in hiding from two weeks ago when I said A Million Ways to Die in the West would make $45 Million. Yeah, had did that work out? We’ll move on from that little blunder, as I’m sure you want to read about movies that are actually relevant, in which there are two this weekend. These sequels couldn’t be more different, except for one thing – both will make a dragon sized crap load of money.

Writer/Director team Chris Miller and Phil Lord – so hot right now. I thought the original 21 Jump Street was going to be a big fat waste of time, but it completely shocked me to the core with how funny it was. Some could say the creative duo did the same thing with The LEGO Movie earlier this year. All the early buzz on 22 Jump Street is that hilarity will more than ensue. Everyone loves Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum together, it looks hysterical, and I know I’m definitely excited. I’m guessing a 23 Jump Street will be announced by the time I write next week’s box office predictions.

I’ll just come out and say that I haven’t seen How to Train Your Dragon solely based on the movie’s title. I’m sorry. I don’t care how many people tell me how good it is, I can’t get past how atrocious that title is. Moving past that though, while everyone loved the original, I thought the four year layoff would hurt the film significantly. Two reasons why no one has to worry about that anymore though are the insanely positive reviews, and the fact that it’s the only kid’s movie in theaters right now. It will dominate that entire market, and as we just saw with Frozen and The LEGO Movie, if it’s good, the money will roll in for weeks and weeks.

How Will It All Break Down…

While both new releases are set to clean up and blow past their predecessor’s box office, it will be the kiddies who ultimately rule the weekend.
