#FridayReads: Eddie Trunk’s Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal

Heavy metal has been an essential part of Pop-Break since the beginning. It makes logical sense because, well, I’m the editor-in-chief of the site and a lifelong metalhead.

However, these past seven days, we’ve talked a lot about metal, definitely more than we usually do. We (and by we I mean Anthony Toto) spent all of last Friday get soaked in the rain at the Mayhem Festival in Camden, New Jersey where talked to the likes of Cannibal Corpse, KORN, Suicide Silence, Body Count, Darkest Hour and Veil of Maya. Yesterday (August 7) we posted our interview with Skid Row and today we published our interview with Queensryche. This entire weekend our own intrepid Molly Boekenheide will be in Montana covering the Rockin’ the Rivers Festival in Montana.

Yeah, that’s a ton of metal.

So, keeping with the metal spirit I decided to focus on one of my all-time favorite musical personalities, Eddie Trunk for this week’s #FridayReads. Trunk, as many of you know, is the host of vh1 Classic’s That Metal Show along with Don Jamieson and Jim Florentine. He is also an icon in the New York City radio world, hosting Friday Night Rocks, an amazing late night all hard rock and heavy metal (usually in the classic vein) radio program.

He’s also (besides being a great dude to interview) an accomplished author having penned two installments of Eddie Trunk’s Essential Hard Rock and Heavy Metal. For fans of this musical genre, reading what goes on in Trunk’s beautiful is an engrossing yet fast read. Trunk’s encyclopedic knowledge of and intimate history with the titans of metal and hard rock such as Kiss, Metallica, Iron Maiden, Ronnie James Dio and his personal fave, UFO, are the kind of stories that you just want to sit on the floor, cross your legs and listen to like you were a kid listening to your grandpa regaling you with tales of “back in his day.” They’re glorious stories that are bolstered by same rare, vintage concert photography from shows Trunk actually attended.

Trunk deftly walks the line between historian, commentator and fan. His passion for the metal and hard rock genres know no bounds, but they also don’t blind him from the truth of many situations. He’ll admit when a band wasn’t at their best, even if he loves them.

Hard rock and metal fans, if you’ve never set your eyes on these books, correct that immediately.
