Pop-Ed: Our Favorite Nintendo Moments

Matt Kelly (Contributor) My favorite memory of Nintendo isn’t a game strictly speaking. It’s a song. Specifically it’s a song called “So Happy Together” by the Turtles. It’s the song that led to what I consider the greatest game in history and what is certainly my favorite series of games ever made. I think everyone that knows what I’m talking about will agree that you can’t hear the song without thinking about this game.

The song was used in a commercial in which mascots dressed as Mario, Donkey Kong, Yoshi, and Pikachu were skipping through a meadow holding hands (except for Pikachu since the Pikachu costume had weird hands). Everyone was happy. Life was good. Then out of nowhere Mario kicks Yoshi. The song, in true 90’s fashion, does a record scratch and continues playing while everyone starts wailing on each other.

The fighting was peppered with footage from Super Smash Brothers, a new fighting game which took all of the Nintendo characters and pitted them against each other in a brawl to the death. It was the start of an awesome fighting game dynasty and beyond that, it was one of the great moves in video game marketing history. Besides being a hilarious commercial, it was an opportunity to introduce you to fun new characters like Ness and Starfox and get you interested in playing these great new games.

We now stand one month from the release of Super Smash Brothers 4 for the 3DS and I am so excited for it, I feel like a ten year old watching this awesome commercial.
