Pop-Ed: Our Favorite Friends Moments

Asia Martin: I was never a fan of Friends. My best friend would talk about it relentlessly and still to this day watches reruns from the DVD set she bought right after the final episode. I smile and nod out of support when my friend goes on her rants about it (which have dwindled these days), but I have yet to fully grasp all the hoopla surrounding the show. I always thought of it as the fully-backed ‘mainstream’ version of Living Single. So, I’ll take Khadijah, Maxine, Kyle, Overton, Regine, and Synclaire over Chandler, Monica (Courteney Cox), Joey, Phoebe, Rachel and Ross any day of the week.

Even though I wasn’t an avid watcher, I did catch some episodes (not enough to have a favorite scene) and found it a bit entertaining. You won’t catch me laughing hard at its punch lines and theatrical scenes but I did like the clean humor and the camaraderie of the group. Their chemistry and loyalty to one another kept the show going strong for 10 years and they were able to make each other legends in TV land. That’s a relationship that I wish all my favorite TV shows had possessed. With that said, they deserve all the praise they get.
