Pop-Break Live: Pop-Break’s Five-Year Anniversary Party

Jason Robert & The Ruiners

Jason Robert — a.k.a Pop-Break senior writer Jason Kundrath — opened up the show with his new band, The Ruiners. I’ve been a long-time fan of Jason’s work, going back to his college days fronting the band Nebulous Thoughts and throughout his glorious run in one of the most under-appreciated bands of the past 20 years: Hero Pattern. Look them up — they’re amazing.

Nostalgia aside, Jason’s new project, featuring two lead vocalists and piano, was the perfect way to kick off the show. The band has a wonderful soulfulness, and Jason’s voice was as crisp and emotion-filled as it was 15 years ago. I hope this band gets out there a lot more to perform because they have a fantastic pop sensibility to them, and their hooks are just so damn infectious.
