The New York Comic Con panel for the hit CBS series Elementary wasted no time showing the audience what they came to see. The crowd was treated to an advanced screening of the season three premiere, which doesn’t air until 10pm tonight. Needless to say the audience was ecstatic. The show, which puts a spin on Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s famous detective Sherlock Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller), places him in the modern day New York City with a female sidekick Joan Watson (Lucy Liu).

After the episode, the cast along with Robert Doherty, the show’s executive producer, came out to answer questions and shed light on the hit show’s third season. Along with Doherty, the panel included Jonny Lee Miller, Lucy Liu, and Ophelia Lovibond.

The cast promised a different change of pace to the show, specifically centering around Sherlock and Watson’s “fractured” relationship after last season’s falling out. Doherty gave insight on the new character Kitty Winter and how she’ll shake up the crime solving duo’s dynamic. The panel wrapped up lastly with the cast teasing at Moriarty’s eventual return. Although they remained tight-lipped throughout the hour they promised a great season to come.

Season two ended with Sherlock and Watson parting ways. It was left unclear whether Sherlock would take the job with MI6 in London. In the premiere, we find out that they haven’t worked together nor seen each other in months. It’s not long before a puzzling murder in a New York City hotel brings the two back together. Watson doesn’t welcome Sherlock back with open arms however but the two must overcome their difficulties to catch the culprit.

The episode itself was excellent. Miller and Liu returned to the top of their game. The premiere managed to get a lot of things right — wasting no time showing how the characters have moved on (or haven’t for that matter). This leads directly into a murder that pulls Sherlock and Holmes back to each other’s lives. With the scripts usual fantastic pacing seasoned with sharp wit and moments of ingenuity, it’s refreshing to see that the hit show still has so much story in the pipeline. This marks the first episode of Ophelia Lovibond’s Kitty Winter and so far it’s interesting to see how she’ll play into this universe and how she’ll affect the characters. Given that the episode was very well received by the panel’s audience, I have a feeling this will be another strong season and that there is much more to come!

Season 3 of the hit show returns tonight at 10pm.
