25 Days of Christmas: ‘It’s A Wonderful Life’

CHRISTMASHEADER

The Holiday season is always filled with memorable films, music and décor. As a young child I always looked forward to trimming the Christmas tree and watching Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. As I have gotten older, like most adults, the Holidays aren’t quite as exciting. As a freelance writer and service industry professional, the Holiday season has a tendency to escape me. However, there is one film that has yet to escape my holiday festivities and that would be Frank Capra’s 1946 film It’s a Wonderful Life.

Considered to be one of cinematic history’s most critically acclaimed films, this Holiday classic tells the story of George Bailey, an overworked businessman who begins to question his existence. Despite having a well-paying job and a loving wife and family, George Bailey contemplates suicide one Christmas Eve night when he his visited by an angel named Clarence. Clarence allows George a glimpse at how the world would be had he never existed. While the film is rather sad at times, It’s a Wonderful Life is simply inspirational and-despite its title-wonderful. With moving performances from a talented cast including James Stewart as George, Donna Reed as Mary Bailey and Henry Travers as the fun-loving angel, Clarence, this film continues to shine despite its age.

What I personally love about the film is just how authentic George Bailey is. I believe everyone in this world at one time or another feels like George and begins to ponder what the meaning and purpose of their life is. Now unfortunately we all don’t have a guardian angel like Clarence who can give us a sneak peak at a world that we are no longer apart of. However, Capra’s cinematic masterpiece teaches viewers to treasure their family and friends and to make the most of what life has to offer a message fit for every Holiday season!
