Interview: Gravity Well

gravity-well-header

Gravity Well Is (Band Members & The Instruments They Play):

Jim Millheiser: Vocals/Guitar

Nick Abatemarco: Bass

Brian McLaughlin: Lead Guitar

John Caporaso: Drums

We’re based out of: Ocean County, New Jersey

The Story of Our Name: Brian helped come up with the name from the title of an old song from a previous band. The name sounded cool and it grew to have meaning to us. A gravity well is opposing forces coming together to create a resistance. We like to think of ourselves as a group that has come together to create an awesome force of music.

Any new music coming out: We have three songs out now on a demo and we will be releasing our first full length 11 song album around June 2015.

You’ve seen us before [in other bands]:

Some other bands you may have seen us in are as follows:

Jim: Perfect Inertia, Breathe Unbroken, Fast Exit

Nick: Fall or Take Flight, Breathe Unbroken

Brian: Panface

John: Perfect Inertia, Of Memories Past, Breathe Unbroken

Our sound has been likened to: Pearl Jam, Weezer, Descendents, and Metallica

Can you talk about the artists that have inspired you? Also, what people in your life have inspired you to create music?

Jim: For me, there are a lot of artists I look up to. The main one would be Eddie Vedder. His song writing and emotion has always appealed to me since I was young. For guitar, the style of Rivers Cuomo is my biggest influence. His ability to use his metal background in rock/power pop is what inspires me. His song structuring is very catchy and his ability to use his metal background in rock/power pop is what inspires how I write.

Nick: Artists who have inspired me are Les Claypool, Cliff Burton, Larry Graham, Bob Dylan, and Geddy Lee. I grew up with punk rock and metal. Primus, Megadeth, and AFI are some of my favorite bands. I am always very inspired by my band mates Jim, John, and Brian. I am very fortunate to be able to rock out with such great friends. My parents have always been my biggest supporters, fans, my motivation, and my inspiration to keep pursuing my love of playing music. My grandparents have also supported my love for music. Last Year I lost my grandfather. He always encouraged me to keep pursuing my dreams of playing music and he is my biggest inspiration.

december-mondaysBrian: I am inspired and influenced by everyday things. I grew up with a punk , rock, and metal background. I am inspired by my band mates as well. We were each one of the primary song writers for our former bands which make it a lot of fun to write music together.

John: Personally, the artists I am inspired by are The Dillinger Escape Plan, Tool, and Breaking Benjamin. My mom is my biggest inspiration.

There are so many bands out there in the Asbury scene to check out — what do you think separates Gravity Well from everyone else?

There are a lot of amazing bands in New Jersey. There are so many creative individuals making great music and venues that provide the outlet for it that keep the Asbury music scene thriving. We have all been playing together in different bands with each other for close to 15 years. Even though Gravity Well is a new band for us, the chemistry we have established between each other has carried over. Our sound pays homage to throwback punk and rock music that we listened to growing up. We are not afraid to experiment with different genres in the rock spectrum and try new ideas. Our sound will be recognizable, but unique.

If someone read this interview and never heard you before, but decided to check you out, what song would you recommend they listen to in order to understand what Gravity Well are all about?

Our song “Take Away” really shows our energy and its homage to the punk rock and metal music we were inspired by growing up. It is fun to play live because we really get the crowd involved in singing along and it is very high energy.

A bit of more broad, sweeping question — what is it that you love about being in Gravity Well?

There are so many great things about being in Gravity Well, but the thing we all love most about being in the band is that we have so much fun doing it. We love playing shows, interacting with the crowd, enjoying the other bands, and writing music together. The whole experience is awesome.

What can the people coming out to see you guys perform expect to see from you guys in terms of a live experience?

They can expect a lot of energy and fun. We love to play shows and it is visible in our live performances. We like to get the crowd involved by singing along and taking a crowd selfie with us. Taking a selfie has become a tradition of ours at each of our shows.

What do you have planned for the rest of 2014?

We have an awesome show at the Wonder Bar on Monday, December 15th which we are excited about. That will be our last show of 2014, but we already have some great shows and big things planned for 2015. One big thing we have planned is to finish up and release our first full length album that we recorded at Lakehouse Studios. We are in the final stages and we plan on having it ready for June. Come check out one of our shows and take a selfie with us!

Gravity Well performs at Happy Mondays at The Wonder Bar, tonight December 15, along with Only Living Boy and InCircles.
