TV Recap: Girls, ‘Female Author’

Girls-Season-4-Poster

Female Author Plot Summary:

All the girls are back once again discussing topics in their life such as relationships, jobs, friendships, and in general just speaking out about everything.

The “female author” this week seems to be suffering some writer’s block.

In this episode we see the following…

1. The further development of the friendship between Adam and Jessa (Adam Driver and Jemima Kirke), which is the most perfect pairing ever.

2. How Shoshanna (Zosia Mamet) is forever unnecessary and annoying.

3. How Marnie (Allison Williams) finally is standing up for what is right in a sort of cliché way.

4. How Hannah (Lena Dunham) finally deals with being the outsider.

This episode, compared to the past two, is lacking in almost every way. However, this isn’t to say the episode isn’t good, it has its high points; it is just missing that certain kick that made the past two episodes just so great.

To kick off with the good, the friendship involving Adam and Jessa is just so oddly perfect you don’t see it coming. These two characters are known for being pure chaos, and having them come together and almost balance each other out is a huge step in character development for the show. Albeit some scenes are a bit dramatic, such as Adam jumping at a cop who was arresting Jessa and being “too rough” with her. However, the writing for them seemed to be extremely realistic, with Adam even calling Jessa out for her antics and bull that she has been pulling since day one. Also, the fact that both Driver and Kirke may possibly be the best actors on the show, next to Dunham, doesn’t exactly hurt the potential for this storyline either.

Another excellent part of the episode is the acting and line delivery of Miss Dunham herself. The scene in which she just rips her fellow students apart and calls them out for being a bit too pretentious and mopey is perfect and just so Hannah. It reminded me why I fell in love with this show such a long time ago.

However, with the good comes the bad.

The writing, besides the two scenes listed above, wasn’t exactly up to par with the past two episodes. It seemed to slow progress down a bit instead of speeding it up. In particular, the scene with Shoshanna and her potential employer was completely unnecessary and downright annoying. Any episodes without the character of Shoshanna would be a good one for me.

Along with this failing plotline, the plot of Marnie and Desi (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) isn’t exactly exciting either. While it is refreshing to see Marnie finally realize her relationship with Desi isn’t good, it’s a predictable plotline for the mistress to want the man she is sleeping with to leave his girlfriend and start a relationship with her. The writing for this is all been there done that, nothing new, and dragging with predictability.

All in all, the episode wasn’t terrible, just predictable and lacking in the greatness that was the past two episodes. With great scenes such as the ones featuring Adam, Jessa, and Hannah, it saves the episode from pure tedium, but if future episodes continue to dwell on less than exciting plotlines featuring Shoshanna and Marnie the show may begin to suffer. Hopefully the female authors of this show will begin to get creative again, while still staying true to the realistic nature of these lovely ‘Girls.’
