That Awkward Moment (2014)

Now let’s be clear. This movie is very bad.

That doesn’t mean I don’t love it. I really don’t know why either.

Maybe I find it funny, in an unintentional way. I might just think it’s hilarious to watch the way these guys are written. It doesn’t seem real. The words coming out of these radical dude’s mouths seem like they were not written by a radical dude at all but a lame adult. And looking at pictures of the director Tom Gormican (and I cannot find his age anywhere) he don’t look like no spring chicken. Any movie that uses the word “dude” like That Awkward Moment is worth a watch.

Maybe there is something to the unfiltered realness of it. There are scenes about nothing but farting and, as much as we try to pretend we don’t, that is what guys talk about. A lot. There might be some real honesty in this movie that no one else is bothering to touch on. Maybe relationships are hard. Maybe we are idiots.

Maybe it has something to do with the leads. The team of Effron, Teller, and Jordan is just great. Ever since 17 Again, Zac Effron’s stock has been rising steadily because he seems like a really fun likable guy. Miles Teller, the kid from 21 and Over as well as the Academy favorite Whiplash, is such a jerk and yet so great. Don’t even get me started on Jordan. He is all the fun of Will Smith without the Jayden. The team has so much charisma and chemistry together, you want these complete tools to be happy. You want them to become adults and find true happiness and in the end isn’t that what a romantic comedy is all about?  –Matthew Nando Kelly
