TV Recap: The Flash, ‘Fallout’

"Pilot"

Fallout Plot:

After the nuclear explosion separates Ronnie (Robbie Amell) and Dr. Stein (Victor Garber), Barry (Grant Gustin) and the team believe both men are safe. Barry gets some important information about time travel.

Grodd help me. That was one hell of an ending.

Now let’s get the other stuff out of the way, so we can talk about that stinger.

So, Ronnie and Stein apparently can’t stand each other. They are basically the worst roommates ever. Ronnie is handsome and Martin is smart. What an odd couple. Once they are separated, the tension makes it seem like they will never work together again. Right? Wrong. They will fuse back into Firestorm twice to fight General Eiling (Clancy Brown) and then just to fly away at the end. Honestly, it does work. The costume isn’t awful and the CGI is great. Overall, the Firestorm set up took a lot of work but it paying off big time.

The return of General Eiling gave a big jolt of gravitas to ‘Fallout.’ Man’ does Clancy Brown know how to deliver a line or what? He seems interested in creating a meta human army with Firestorm being his big gun. Unfortunately for the team, he is no match for a powered up Firestorm and is thwarted by our heroes. Then something amazing happens.

Okay, so let me get a couple of things straight here.

How intelligent is Grodd?

Originally it seemed like he was on his way to being a super-intelligent gorilla. He didn’t speak. He just scribbled his name all over the sewer walls. Don’t get me wrong, he was smarter than your average gorilla. It just seemed like it would be a while before he was walking and talking and mind controlling. That seems completely wrong now. Not only was he calmly walking upright, but he was using telepathy to “speak” with Eiling. What he eventually did to Eiling was unclear. It is clear, however, that Grodd is not to be messed with.

Wells knows Grodd?

How crazy was that? I knew they had a history but apparently they are now working together. Not only does Grodd apparently know Wells’  (Tom Cavanaugh) identity (not that it really matters) but Grodd does Wells’ dirty work and dispatches of Eiling. Are they on a team for some reason? Is Grodd the brains behind the tachyon plan? Does he even know about the regular Flash? Is this Grodd from the future?

What is Grodd doing in the sewer?

It seemed originally, like he was too stupid to hide anywhere but in the sewer. It is a good place for a gorilla that doesn’t know that forests exist. Now that we know that he is at least mildly intelligent, why hasn’t Grodd left the sewer? Might it be part of some master plan Wells is working on? Does Grodd have his own angle that he is working? It doesn’t seem like there is much for him to do in the city at this point. He must have a plan that is keeping him in the sewer. That or the animators don’t want to render him in full light. Yeah, probably that second one.

Man was that a great stinger or what? The line “Dear God.” “Not God, Grodd” will go down as one of the best lines in the series. Grodd looked fantastic. His walk was intimidating. The voice was terrifying. Maybe he is a bigger part of this plan than we thought. Could this open up even crazier theories than before? Has Grodd been controlling minds all along? Will certain plot holes fall away when it is revealed that Grodd was there the whole time pulling the strings? I assumed he was being saved for the second season. Will Grodd be a bigger part of Wells’ plan in Season 1? On thing’s for sure.

Thank Grodd It’s Tuesday.

Rating: Episode 6/10
