Megan LaBruna – Hindsight

Hindsight is a VH1 original series. I know what you’re thinking. “What? VH1 has original programming that isn’t crap?” It’s true, I swear. The premise of the show follows the main character, Becca (Laura Ramsey) as she is preparing to say “I Do” for the second time in her life.  She is unsure of whether she is truly in love with her current fiancé, or if she is just with him because he’s a good guy with a steady job who treats her well.  Essentially the opposite of her first marriage which ran hot and cold, but never seemed to be lacking in the physical attraction department.

hindsight1

Seems like your average romantic comedy show, until Becca wakes up the morning of her big day only to realize it’s 1995 and the big day is her first marriage. Is she hallucinating? No. As the story unfolds it turns out life, as it seems, has given her a second chance to try to right the wrongs of her past. Will she make the same mistakes? Will she make new mistakes that will alter the future? And what the heck happened between her and her best friend, Lolly (Sarah Goldberg) that they’re no longer speaking in 2015?

So why can’t I stop watching? First off, the music is great. This shouldn’t be such a surprise since the show is on VH1, which at one point in its existence was all about music and not about crappy reality television. They have rekindled my love of all things 90’s. Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Cranberries, REM, Oasis, Alanis Morissette, Green Day, U2, Third Eye Blind…do I have to keep going or do you get the gist?

Seriously, the music is fantastic. I thought they made a mistake this past week when I heard a distinctly millennial song, but really it was just a flashback (err, flash forward technically?) to 2003, during the incident that ended Becca and Lolly’s friendship. Which is another reason I am addicted to this show; they don’t string the audience on too long. It’s not like Lost or Pretty Little Liars or How To Get Away With Murder, where every week more and more questions build up with no answers. Nope, this show answers them within a few episodes. I’m all for cliffhangers but some of these shows have taken them to the next level.

But the biggest reason I am in love with this show? It reminds me of CBC’s Being Erica. The premise was vaguely familiar, except the main character wasn’t stuck permanently in her past, rather she would occasionally go back and change a moment in time or a past memory, which would alter her present. Unfortunately they only aired the first season on SoapNet and never finished showing the rest of the series, so in a way, Hindsight to me is like the second season of Being Erica that I never got, and I’m okay with that.

The cast isn’t incredibly well known, but they have decently developed characters and a promising storyline, not to mention the sub-plots can be pretty entertaining.  All in all, I’d say definitely take the time to check out this little gem.  I don’t know that it would have made it had it been picked up by networks such as ABC or CBS or so on, but because it’s on VH1, its chances of survival are much better. The show has definite promise, especially with Becca constantly revealing to Lolly fun little spoiler alerts from the future, such as the revelation that Bret Michaels goes bald and Monica and Chandler end up together…classic 90’s! So go belt out your best rendition of “Ironic” and tune in Wednesday nights at 10pm to catch VH1’s Hindsight.
