Notable Openings This Weekend: Chappie, The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, Unfinished Business

We’ll soon be hitting a run of big openings, but right now we’re still in that Post-Oscars haze. I’m sure that’s what the studio behind Chappie thought, as they assumed with Neill Blomkamp’s name they could clean up on a quiet weekend. I’m not so sure about that. We’ll get into Chappie though, as we will the sequel that might as well be the Avengers for senior citizens, and another Vince Vaughn comedy that I’m sure will be hilarious beyond belief. Yay. Let’s predict:

I’m not saying Neill Blomkamp is going to be M. Night Shyamalan. Everyone relax, okay. Take a breath. I only bring up that name as a reminder. Neill Blomkamp came out of nowhere with the brilliant District 9. After praising it to the high heavens, we all did what we normally do, which is declare him the next “Insert name here.” Then Elysium happened. Ouch. Now with Chappie upon us, it doesn’t look good. The reviews have been bad. The buzz is non-existent. This will open okay at number one due to lack of competition, but the Neill Blomkamp name is losing weight fast. If this next Alien movie doesn’t hit big, The M. Night Shyamalan tag may be more prevalent.

I like Vince Vaughn. I really do. But if you look at his string of movies the last few years, it’s just sad. I’m sure no one is more excited for True Detective Season 2 than Vince Vaughn. There’s really nothing to say here. The movie looks terrible, it won’t be funny, and will borderline bomb. Next.

So The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel is kind of opening in wide release, but still not a ton of theaters? I don’t know, whatever. I hate these types of openings It makes my job tougher. Relative to its theater count though, it should do pretty well. Clearly people liked the first one enough to get this sequel made. It has a ton of likable actors, and will be the one movie people 65 and over go see this year.

HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…

Chappie wins the day fine, but its take will be fairly underwhelming for a director who was considered to be the next “Insert name here.” Fifty Shades of Grey will be out of the top five, that’s kind of exciting.

1. Chappie – $22 Million

2. Unfinished Business – $10 Million

3. Focus – $9.5 Million

4. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – $8.5 Million

5. Kingsman: The Secret Service – $7 Million
