Notable Openings This Weekend: Cinderella, Run All Night

Well Chappie really took it on the chin last week. Yikes. Even though it opened #1, no one was celebrating in the Chappie household. I mentioned previously that last week was the end of the mediocre weekends for a while, and we kick it off with a big one right out of the gate. Let’s get to the behemoth that is Cinderella.

A whirlwind of factors will contribute to the massive opening Cinderella is sure to garner. Known property. Nothing else is playing. Great reviews. Disney. It’s going to clean up. With the success of Maleficent already, get ready for more live action Disney movies to get green lit. We already have Beauty and the Beast on the horizon, and I’m guessing a slew of announcements for live action adaptations of vintage Disney properties are coming real soon. Everything is fair game.

For the macho crowd who won’t be going to Cinderella unless they’re forced to, we got another Liam Neeson actioner with Run All Night. Neeson’s last opening was pretty good despite crappy reviews, but that was already a proven franchise in Taken 3. Neeson’s last non franchise effort was A Walk Among the Tombstones, which opened at just under $13 Million. It’s safe to say Run All Night will do similar business. That’s fine, but it’s clear these old man Neeson ass kickers are starting to peter out. I certainly love watching the man snap necks, but this could be an opportunity for him to transition back to Oskar Schindler-esque type roles.

HOW WILL IT ALL BREAK DOWN…

Cinderella heaves a giant glass slipper on everybody.

1. Cinderella — $78 Million

2. Run All Night — $12.5 Million

3. Chappie — $7 Million

4. The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel — $6.5 Million

5. Focus — $5 Million
