Moving forward to the next part of the premiere,, “Lawnmower Maintenance and Postnatal Care” didn’t really pick up until the middle half; the second act was the better portion. This episode contained the Dean wasting money on a worthless virtual reality program that makes copying and pasting an extensive chore. Jim Rash’s fumbling Pelton is always entertaining, but using him in this context was a little dry. No laughs are had at his expense while he’s toying around with his new machine. Pretty sad. Also, why haven’t we seen a new Dean outfit yet?
Britta’s storyline is a little more interesting, as she’s dealing with rebelling against her parents who are way too nice. When her car won’t start and her folks hand her money, she steals a kid’s three-wheeler, which is just funny and a true characteristic of Britta; she’s so into her own way of thinking that she doesn’t suffer at the hands of true embarrassment. Gillian Jacobs juggles the humor and humbleness well, and analyzes a relationship with parents most could relate to.
Just like the end of “Ladders”, the end of “Lawnmower Maintenance” takes us away from the usual happenings of Greendale to offer up a fictional piece of entertainment. This time, its based on a movie Abed and Annie are checking out the episode, called Portugese Gremlins. Honestly, I loved watching this mock trailer, and I would watch the real thing if it existed. I really hope these fake teasers become a traditional thing to bookend Community Season 6 entries. Both featured have been awesome and hilarious.
While “Lawnmower Maintenance” finished strong, it started a bit rough. Even though I love the Dean, he’s a cartoon character compared to everyone else on the show, and he needs to be used more wisely. Let’s hope future episodes can balance him a bit better, cause this proved the case that too much of a good thing can end up negatively.
