Veep, ‘Joint Session’ Plot:

Selina’s (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) presidency gets off to a rocky start, as expected, as she and her team adjust to the new digs.

Well, Veep, you’re back and as biting and ruthless as ever. I half-expected the show to change its title for this season (and beyond?) in particular, considering its titular heroine, if you can really call her that, isn’t just a veep anymore, but POTUS herself.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus is once again effortlessly delivering the same fake smile-grin-and-bear-it facade laced with sarcasm and foul language in a way only she can.

We start off seeing a teleprompter malfunction during a POTUS speech, only to flash back and see how everything went wrong, which, of course it did.

Among the more interesting tid-bits: Gary’s (Tony Hale) spot in Selina’s life is a bit in flux. “No, I don’t need you, Gary,” she says at one point. He can’t go to certain meetings with her, and it proves difficult enough that he even stares at her from afar.

Speaking of spies, Jonah (Timothy Simons) pays a visit to new veep Andrew Doyle (Phil Reeves), and is tasked with keeping an eye on Selina at the White House. Meanwhile, Teddy Sykes (Patton Oswalt), the veep’s chief of staff, literally grabs Jonah’s balls, so there’s that. Is this a joke gone too far or could Teddy be hitting on the bewildered Jonah? It’s unclear where this plot is headed.

Also, Amy’s (Anna Chlumsky) helping out with Selina’s campaign, but could not be for long when one of Selina’s potential foes’ campaign managers says he’s calling it quits — would Selina really ditch Amy, though? Potentially.

Anyway, Selina agrees to a $50 billion cut involving a submarine fleet, only for it to blow up in her face when it’s discovered this will lose her a lot of support. In an effort to take this announcement out of her speech (we’re catching up to where the show started), Mike (Matt Walsh), Sue (Sufe Bradshaw) and the team work at changing up the text of the speech, only for it to disappear, then come back, but with an outdated file version. This file included details of the previous president’s plan to invest $60 billion in the submarine fleet. Gulp.

My favorite Selina lines of the episode:  “Everything’s my fault now.” “And we will be ready for that future whatever.” Same, Selina. Same. She also referred to a coffee as “Colombian tongue sex,” whatever that means.

I’d also like to point out that Jonah referred to himself as Jobi-Wan Kenobi. Also, Amy delivers a crucial line that I now want to use on those who don’t know how to type: “How come you only type with two fingers? You’re not a sloth.”

Gary again proves his incompetence by breaking Selina’s glasses in the end credits.

It’s safe to say this season will more than likely live up to its Veep-ness yet again, though considering its showrunner shake-up come a potential (but probable) season five, we’ll have to see what the Oval Office has in store.

Rating: 9/10

Veep airs Sundays on HBO.
