Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice – An Analysis

Perfect.

That’s exactly what I wanted from this trailer. I can’t remember a movie where there is so much on the line. This movie needs wins across the board – it needs to get people excited about DC’s universe. It needs to make a billion dollars worldwide. It needs to work. My biggest fear was that Warner Brothers would wimp out on the serious, realistic tone they established in Man of Steel because of the divisive reaction. In short, they would “Marvel-ise” it. What this teaser proved to me is that they are going for it. Despite everything on the line in terms of creating a new cinematic universe, WB is still going for a film that won’t please everyone. An ambitious film that is harsh, dark, and balls to the wall epic. Let’s dissect it.

We’ll get to Batman in a minute, but let’s start with the set up. It picks up right where we left off, and takes the realistic response that human beings would have towards Superman – what do we make of this guy? What should he do? Is he a savior? Is he a destroyer? Should he just get off our planet? Everybody has an opinion, and I love the theme they’re going for! I need to watch the trailer more times, but we certainly heard a lot of voices in that opening, including what I think was Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor saying “Devils don’t come from the hell beneath us. They come from the sky.” I can’t wait to see more of Eisenberg’s Luthor as the marketing ramps up.

Speaking of dialogue, this trailer had oodles of great lines. I know some are going to rant and rave about it being “heavy handed” and “Nolan-esque,” but for me, it was gripping as all hell.

There’s nothing that’s going to top The Dark Knight trilogy for me when it comes to Batman. It’s just not going to happen. We also have to keep in mind that this is the third film iteration of Batman, and already it’s way different than the other two. The Michael Keaton Batman was all business. The Christian Bale Batman was strategic and calculating. THIS Batman is a frightening man who puts the fear of God in you. I don’t get the sense this Batman hides in the shadows a whole lot.

There’s been an endless amount of discussion on Ben Affleck’s casting since the beginning. The shot of Bruce Wayne as Alfred (Jeremy Irons) lectures was all I needed to see. He looks like an intense, cold son of a bitch, almost Ryan Gosling Drive-esque. I love that Batman is basically a villain in this movie. For a character that’s been portrayed a million different ways in all types of media, this take already has me fascinated.

The best part of the trailer though was finally hearing Batman speak in his robotic armored suit voice – “Tell me, do you bleed? You will.” Awesome. AWESOME!
