Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 Plot Summary

Jersey Mall cop, Paul Blart (Kevin James) takes his teenage daughter (Raini Rodriguez) with him to Las Vegas for a security-guard expo. While there, he stumbles upon a heist and must single-handedly apprehend the crooks.

I’m about to call the cops; I’ve been robbed.

I’ve been robbed of my money, my time, and my anticipation leading up to the sequel to Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

I loved the original movie from 2009, from the scenes of the New Jersey State Police academy to Amy working at a fake hair kiosk at a typical New Jersey mall to Paul Blart using a Segway as his vehicle of choice to catch criminals. The plot was well developed, humorous and had multiple layers.

Unfortunately, Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 falls flat. The characters are not developed this time around, the plot line takes too long to become interesting and the jokes are few and far between.

I enjoy Kevin James’s comedy but this was not his best performance. He attempts to portray emotions about losing all his dreams, and tries as any parent does to hold onto his child for as long as possible, but unfortunately the audience doesn’t feel an extreme sense of empathy for him.

The “villains” don’t come across as very villainous either. Whereas in the first movie, I eagerly awaited every move the gang members made to overtake the mall. This time I was slightly bored by the bad guys’ actions.

The ending scenes where Blart confronts his nemesis are the best of the movie, but after waiting more than an hour for some action, you’re ready to go home. The commercials showed the second funniest scenes of the movie, where Blart fights with an exotic bird and gets kicked by a patrol horse, but since you would have been familiar with those scenes from TV, they lose some luster as well.

The only characters I enjoyed were Blart’s fellow security officers. Of particular interest to me was Vic DiBitetto who lives in my hometown – and is known for his panicked rants on YouTube about buying milk and bread before a snowstorm. Just looking at him made me laugh because his facial expressions are spot on. The other officers were quirky, which added some life to this otherwise dull movie.

I looked forward to this movie for weeks but am very disappointed. I expected to be laughing the entire time but rarely cracked a smile. I was happier about sitting in the comfortable, reclining seats in the movie theater than actually paying attention to the movie.
