TV Recap: The Flash, ‘Who is Harrison Wells?

"Pilot"

Who is Harrison Wells Plot:

Joe and Cisco visit Starling City and ask Captain Lance for help with their investigation into Dr. Wells; Laurel asks Cisco for a favor; Barry faces a new foe who can disguise himself into anyone he touches.

Hey remember that cool sizzle reel from a couple weeks ago? It was full of a lot of interesting moments that were sure to have big consequences. Barry and Caitlin were kissing. Eddie was shooting cops. Barry was fighting himself. Well guess what? It was all just a lame metahuman and we’re back to square one.

To tell you the truth, this entire episode felt like a fake out. The main plot revolved around the team of Eddie and Barry catching a killer who can steal anyone’s identity and powers just by touching him. Oh wait, he doesn’t get their powers. He only copies their identity. Well then this should be a really quick one. Barry and friends are going to have to be pretty stupid to facilitate this guy escaping just once. Unfortunately they are stupid enough to let him escape not one, not two, not three, but four different times.

The theme of this episode seemed to be: some characters are effortless super geniuses and others are complete idiots. For instance when the super team of Cisco and Joe visited Starling’s Finest, Cisco was able to whip up a canary necklace for Laurel in a couple of hours. That is crazy smart. On the other hand, Laurel just completely outed herself as the Black Canary to Cisco. That is incredibly stupid. If there is one character in the DCTVU that you don’t want to know your secret identity, its Cisco Ramon. She may not know exactly why but it’s still a really bad idea tell anyone your identity especially when your team specialty is getting your ass kicked.

This might have been Barry’s dumbest episode ever. I will forgive him constantly letting the metas escape. We need something like that or else each episode would be about six minutes long. I will also forgive his stalling during the fight with Everyman, because the beatdown at the end was worth it. But come on. Are we honestly supposed to believe that Barry saw Everyman turn into Eddie and then real Eddie gets put in jail and when another Eddie shows up at Barry’s door and Barry isn’t asking any questions? That may been the stupidest thing any character has done on the show and this includes that time Cold and Heatwave shot each other and even when Girder crushed that phone.

The fact that Everyman decided to continue to impersonate that detective that everyone knows is in prison also illustrates that Everyman might be the dumbest meta the show has thrown at us. I don’t mind this nearly as much. There are plenty of clever villains. Cold, Thawne, and even Pied Piper could lead a character like Everyman in an interesting way. Every football team needs a kicker. Hopefully when the Rogues do eventually form in a more interesting way, Everyman can be utilized a little better.

On the other hand, Wells is demonstrating both incredible genius and incredible stupidity. Now we don’t know his whole plan, so maybe it included Barry and the rest of the team stumbling into his secret hideout and finding his future newspaper. Time will tell. What I have a feeling it didn’t include is anyone ever finding Wells’ body, otherwise why bury it? Wells is a smart guy. He built a particle accelerator. He understands the Speed Force for goodness sake! But apparently he has less body disposal knowledge than your average Soprano. Hopefully he gets his stuff together for next week. Hopefully he really brings it for the next few episodes. Who am I kidding? Two weeks til Grodd! Kneel before GRODD!!!
