TV Recap: The Flash, ‘The Trap’

"Pilot"

The Trap Plot:

Barry, Caitlin, Cisco, and Joe set a trap for Wells. Cisco uses himself as bait which puts him in grave danger. Meanwhile, Eddie makes a decision regarding Iris, which leaves Joe a bit unsettled.

The endgame has begun. The race has finally shifted off of the usual ‘Metahuman of the Week’ format. There is now one enemy and his name is Harrison Wells Eobard Thawne. (Let’s just call him Wells to avoid confusion with the other Thawne.) Barry and his team made the first move this week and like many of their first moves, it completely blew up in the their faces, setting the stage wonderfully for the last three episodes of the season.

While snooping around Wells’ secret room, the gang stumbles upon a trove of future information form of a newspaper. Barry, Cisco, and Caitlin all learn what Wells has known for a while. Barry is going to disappear mid-fight with the Reverse Flash in April 2024. Some other interesting details are revealed.

*Barry’s suit will change to a lighter red with a white crest.
*Other heroes exist like the Atom, Green Arrow, and the yet unseen Hawkgirl.
*Iris marries Barry (or someone else with the last name Allen i.e. Tim, Woody)
*Barry creates a weird A.I. hologram thing

Cisco asks what may be the most important question of the show. If they find information out about the future, how will knowing that affect the new future? Will there be what Cisco calls a “causal nexus”? How will Barry’s relationship with Iris change now that he knows they are destined to be together? Will Barry create Gideon because he expect himself to create Gideon? Most importantly, when are we getting that slightly brighter suit?

Speaking of Iris, Eddie had a big question for Joe this week. Eddie wants to marry Iris for some reason and he needs Joe’s blessing. I found this a little sudden. Wasn’t it just two weeks ago that Eddie and Iris were ruining dinners with their ridiculous arguments? Have they even been living together for more than a year? Either way, a night in jail made Eddie’s mind up and now all he needs is her father’s blessing. Unfortunately for Eddie, Joe has already made up his mind about how Iri’s future is going to end up and it ain’t with anyone but Barry.

Joe’s “No” and Barry’s future news spell nothing but tragedy for poor Eddie Thawne. He is now pretty far down the path towards becoming a very compelling villain in seasons ahead. Eddie started out as the guy that was too good to be true. Since then he has learned everything about the Flash while Barry steals his girl. That’s opportunity and motive. Now if only there was a way to show him that his future is a mess and he has nothing left to lose…

‘The Trap’ was supposed to be the moment the gang finally turned the tables on Wells. Using Cisco’s memory as a blueprint, the team would stage the events of the alternate timeline to trick Wells into revealing his evil plan. Once the confession was obtained, the team would use the, now functional, shield generator to save Cisco and Barry would punch Wells to death, one assumes. Then Joe could use that plea to implicate Wells and free Henry and reunite the Allen family. There was only one problem with the Wells knew it from the start.

That’s right. Wells revealed to the team, via supervillain intercom, that he was aware of the plan the whole time and the Wells that Joe shot and killed was in fact Hannibal Bates aka Everyman, last week’s meta. Wells gave the team one last glowing endorsement before revealing that he had been spying on everyone since the beginning with cameras in Barry’s lab, the West’s house, and even Eddie and Iris’ bedroom. He then stole Eddie and is currently waiting to make his next move to destroy Barry Allen.

Tom Cavanagh was excellent. He was finally allowed to let loose and go full villain. Every line was filled with equal parts Thawne confidence and Wells earnestness. My only issue with Wells is that he is now so powerful that I cannot see him surviving the season. For the team to ultimately defeat Wells, they either have to kill him or send him somewhere else in time. Whichever one it turns out to be will leave some really big shoes to fill in Season 2. Perhaps even gorilla-sized…
