NBC Cancels Hannibal

Hannibal

NBC has done the impossible…

They’ve killed off Hannibal Lecter.

The peacock network announced that this will be the final season of the cult thriller, Hannibal. If there’s any silver lining in this story it’s that the network will allow the show to air its finale 10 episodes.

According to a statement released by series creator Bryan Fuller, there seems to be no hard feelings:

“NBC has allowed us to craft a television series that no other broadcast network would have dared, and kept us on the air for three seasons despite Cancellation Bear Chow ratings and images that would have shredded the eyeballs of lesser Standards & Practices enforcers. Jen Salke and her team have been fantastic partners and creatively supportive beyond measure. Hannibal is finishing his last course at NBC’s table this summer, but a hungry cannibal can always dine again. And personally, I look forward to my next meal with NBC.”

There are the requisite rumors the series could find a home elsewhere, but we heard the same thing about Constantine. Right now, the series is in a wait-and-see period in regards to a new home, we’ll keep you posted.

Editor’s Note: Having been the reviewer of record for Hannibal on Pop-Break.com since its series premiere (along with Matthew Taylor this year), it doesn’t come as a surprise that the series is coming to an end on network TV. Hannibal has never been a ratings juggernaut. This has caused the series to be the bubble cancellation bubble for the past two seasons. The reasons are pretty obvious — it was in a dead end time slot of Friday nights at 10pm for Season 1 & 2 (look at what that time did for Constantine), and this year it premiered opposite the most-watched NBA Finals of all-time. I’ve often said this series will work best on cable or a streaming service given it’s tendency for graphic violence. If anyone could find a home for a series with such cult love and critical acclaim, it’s Bryan Fuller. Only time will tell.
