Trailer Tuesday

Deadpool Teaser

Release Date: February 12th, 2015

Starring: Ryan Reynolds, T.J. Miller, Morena Baccarin, Gina Carano

Director: Tim Miller

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Ever since X-Men Origins: Wolverine took Wade Wilson and completely destroyed the character, I’ve been waiting for Deadpool to get his own movie and justice. It looks like the time nearly upon us where the most “out there” comic book character gets his time of day. I couldn’t be happier. –LJF

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: I’m really happy this movie is getting made. I remember being very excited when it was first announced in 2009, when Ryan Reynolds promised the film would stay as far away as possible from the character’s horrible interpretation in X-Men: Origins Wolverine. But the six years of development hell has been a rocky one, and for a while I assumed that the project would be abandoned as Reynolds went for bigger projects. But luckily he stuck with the project all this time, and is promising to deliver a truly faithful adaptation of the character. – JTM

Rate the Trailer: Four point five out of five. I love this trailer. It has everything a Deadpool fan could want. I can’t give it a perfect rating, however, because honestly it features a little too much footage. The triple head shot on the bridge? The back and forth banter with Reynolds and Miller? Colossus showing up (although, not going to lie, he looks better here than in any of the X-Men movies)?! All should’ve been left for the film only. However, the trailer overall is amazing and shows that 20th Century Fox really let the cast and crew make the movie they wanted. It’s vulgar, violent, raunchy, and it’s Deadpool! I hope it lives up to expectations. –LJF

Rate the Trailer: 4 out of 5. It nice to see a superhero movie that doesn’t take itself too seriously after years of increasingly dark films. The trailer does a great job of showcasing Deadpool’s rampant, if childish, humor as well as his insanity and super healing powers, all side effects of a cancer treatment via the Weapon X program. They seem to be going all out in terms of being faithful to Deadpool his time around in order to distance themselves from the X-Men: Origins Wolverine version. Reynolds looks to be having the time of his life in this role, which is no surprise given how hard he lobbied for this film to be made. TJ Miller as Deadpool’s arms dealer Weasel is a nice piece of casting, and it was really cool to see Colossus for a second to help tie the film into the larger X-Men film universe. The little details are all there as well, right down to Deadpool’s eyes being does with CGI to make them as expressive as possible. – JTM

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Theater. I pretty much begged Film Editor Dan Cohen for the review, 7 months before release. I’ve been looking forward to this movie forever and I want to put my thoughts down for it right here on pop-break. I fully believe that Deadpool is going to be a much more difficult concept to appeal to audiences, even way more so than Guardians of the Galaxy. I think Deadpool is different and that’s a kind of comic book movie we need now as well, something a little less formulaic and a little more fun. If the trailer is any indication, the movie is going to be a ton of fun. Can’t wait. –LJF

Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? Theater. January and February are traditionally dead months for movie releases, so Deadpool’s release will be a welcome reprieve from the usual late-winter trash shoveled out to theaters. I’ll definitely be going out to see this one, and hopefully a big box office will let movie studios know that it’s OK to make a superhero film that isn’t constantly brooding. – JTM
