The Top 10 Most Horrifying Moments from NBC’s Hannibal

1. Dolarhyde bites off Chilton’s lips and sends them to Hannibal

Fredrick Chilton (Raúl Esparza) is the universe’s punching bag (though Hannibal would probably see he’s God’s). Up until this point, he had already had some of his organs surgically removed while he was awake, been framed for Hannibal’s crimes as the Chesapeake Ripper, and shot in the face. But somehow, he always came back. And while he wasn’t unscathed, he was relatively well off. But that changed when Francis Dolarhyde (Richard Armitage) AKA the Great Red Dragon abducted him. As punishment for telling lies (Chilton does that a lot) about him in Freddie Lounds’ Tattle Crime tabloid, Dolarhyde bites off his lips and sets him on fire, both which Chilton miraculously lives through. Though surviving as a burnt husk of a man might not qualify as a miracle for some.

There’s a lot to say about this moment. First off, Raúl Esparza and Richard Armitage both give wonderful performances; the level of tension in the scenes before Chilton’s disfigurement is exquisite, and seeing Armitage climb over the table to bite Chilton is absolutely frightening. This is a fate traditionally saved for Lounds, but the show had already faked her death in a similar manner prior to this. It’s also noteworthy that this moment shows that Hannibal can still terrorize who chooses, as it is implied that it Will, tainted with darkness, wanted this to happen to Chilton. And might I add that just seeing the lips gray and decaying is disgusting, as is watching Hannibal eat one.

It’s actually kind of shocking that my top pick is something so recent. It just goes to show that Hannibal continued to surprise us to the very end. That is, if it truly is the end (fingers crossed that it’s not).
