The Top 10 Most Horrifying Moments from NBC’s Hannibal

5. Hannibal takes a buzzsaw to Will’s head

This is a moment from the books that I never expected to end up on TV, largely because I deemed it too violent, and because circumstances would just never allow it. In the novel Hannibal, Dr. Lecter cuts open the head of a character named Paul Krendler (played in the movie by actor and tequila connoisseur Ray Liotta). Hannibal then proceeds to eat poor Mr. Krendler’s brain, while Krendler is still alive and conscious! However, Krendler is not in NBC’s Hannibal. No matter, as in the show, Hannibal presents Will’s brain as a final meal for himself and Jack Crawford.

I had actually read a rumor in passing that Will would replace Krendler for this scene, but I had serious doubts about it. Seeing Hannibal break out the buzzsaw quickly changed that. There are so many things wrong with this scene. First off, in the movie, we don’t even see Lecter cut into Krendler’s head like that. But in the show, we see blood drip down Will’s head as he and Jack can only watch. Needless to say, I worried for Will, because even though I knew they wouldn’t kill him, I thought he might suffer brain damage. Will is Lecter’s friend, but this is the most elegant way for Hannibal to kill him (Will would kill Hannibal otherwise). It’s strangely appropriate, as it harkens back to a line Will says earlier; in Hannibal’s eyes, elegance is more important to God than suffering. I’d say it’s the same with Hannibal himself.
