Disney to Remake Mary Poppins

Disney plans to continue the Mary Poppins story with a new film that takes place 20 years after the original. The new story will be based on other stories written by P.L. Travers and will still focus on the Banks family in London. Right now, the only talent linked to the project is Rob Marshall as director and John DeLuca and Marc Platt as producers.

While Disney is mining old material for new ideas, the good news is they are not rehashing a classic movie that everyone has seen a million times. This doesn’t look to be another Annie situation. In fact, this might be the continuation in movie form that Marry Poppins’ fans didn’t know they wanted. Even though P.L. Travers’ didn’t want Disney adapt any more of her books because she felt the company botched the first one, another adaptation will expose a mainstream audience to more of P.L. Travers’ works and could be a good thing for her legacy.

No word yet on whether Dick Van Dyke’s cockney accent will make an appearance.
