TV Review: The Goldbergs, “A Chorus Lie”

Goldbergs Poster

Adam F. Goldberg stated on Twitter that “A Chorus Lie” was one of his proudest episode creations. Going in, I was pretty pumped to see why this was. I don’t know if the hype ended up backfiring, but I felt that episode 2 of Season 3, was kind of a let down.

Now I’m not saying it wasn’t funny. It was; in fact, I don’t think I’ve ever NOT laughed at an episode of The Goldbergs. However, some of the jokes just missed or were too drawn out.

The major storyline of “A Chorus Lie” is that Adam (Sean Giambrone) is going through puberty, and his voice is changing immensely. What was played off as a minor gag in the first episode worked-here it is taken to a new level and extended almost like a Family Guy joke. The youngest Goldberg is cast as the lead in the school’s production of A Chorus Line and fear he’s going to mess it up based on his changing voice. Mama Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey) sees a way out, thanks to the recent news of Milli Vanilli. Remember that heartbreaking announcement?

Speaking of Mama Goldberg, are we going to try to fit in a “bleeped” curse word every episode this season? I sincerely hope not. Let’s save that for just “random” placements, otherwise it’s going to die fast.

Meanwhile, Erica (Hayley Orrantia) refuses to date anyone because her father (Jeff Garlin) states everyone is a moron; Erica proves the apple doesn’t fall too far from the tree and believes the same. Of the two storylines, this one was more entertaining, as it just had a better payoff.

The funniest part of the whole episode is Barry, who just shifts between all the “goings on” and provides commentary/his boneheaded way of looking at things.

Ultimately, this episode was a let down from last week. Hopefully the premiere luster isn’t lost and The Goldbergs regains its composure for the rest of the season.

Rating: 7/10
