CHEWBACCA

Daniel Cohen: Oh, man.  This would be a tough one.  Chewbacca may live based solely on the fact that his death would be too hard to witness on screen.  The theater would be flooded.  If Chewbacca does kick the bucket, it will be in the most heroic way possible.  I know many are convinced this is happening because of a shot in the trailer where Rey cries over what looks like a lot of fur, but I don’t know.  There’s also a shot in the international trailer where Chewbacca blows something up, so that could mean something.

What Chewbacca has going for him is that Star Wars always like to have that lovable sidekick (other than droids), and I’m not sure who that replacement would be.  Having said all that, I’m basing my entire prediction on Chewbacca based on the fate of another character, so we’ll revisit this again.

Prediction: Dies

Luke Kalamar:  Unless Kashyyyk will suddenly reappear or other Wookies are part of the cast, Chewbacca will not die. His race is one of the most iconic creations in Star Wars history. He was the only Wookie in the first three movies and George Lucas literally created an entire planet because people loved him so much. Just like it can’t be Star Wars without lightsabers, Jedi, and the Dark Side, this brand is nothing without its diverse and unique intergalactic races. It’s less that Chewie should stay. He has to stay for this to remain the iconic property we know and love. Plus, if several theories prove to be true, a certain new addition can let Chewie continue his life debt to Han.

Prediction: Lives

Aaron Sarnecky: Chewbacca has come a long way to be in The Force Awakens, considering he’s been dead in the now apocryphal Expanded Universe for over 15 years. Many fans wondered if we would even see him again. But lo and behold, he showed up in the second teaser for The Force Awakens along with Han. Since Wookiees age slower than humans, he even looked more healthy and lively than his best friend.

It’s possible, I suppose, that something the new characters do could lead to Chewie’s death and cause a rift between them and Han. That would be similar to what happened in the EU. However, I doubt J.J. Abrams and Disney would bring Chewbacca back just to kill him off again.
