Review: Spider-Man/Deadpool #1

Ah, Spider-Man and Deadpool. My favorite Marvel duo. I’ve always considered Deadpool to be a raunchier version of Spider-Man, so it would only make sense that I love the combination of heroes. When I first heard this series announced, I was very excited to get my hands on it, and I wasn’t disappointed. Well, at least not yet.

Spider-Man/Deadpool #1

This first issue begins with the two dangling upside down arguing because they are trying to escape from Dormammu, a villainous devil who has appeared in Marvel comics for quite a while. In any case, Spider-Man quickly gets fed up with Deadpool’s ranting (ranting being an understated term), and in fourth wall breaking mode, Wade Wilson (Deadpool’s alter ego) allows the reader to backtrack as to how the titular heroes got to the position that they are in.

Seems Spider-Man was looking to have S.H.I.E.L.D. capture Hydro-Man but of course, the Merc with a Mouth had other plans, most notably, bringing Spidey to hell, just because. In the midst of all the action, Wilson offers up a heartfelt speech to the wallcrawler, but of course the gesture loses all value when we see Deadpool’s torso just jump off a ledge. It was a laugh out loud moment among a string of notable comedic gags that this initial adventure had to offer.

Deadpool’s true path is revealed as the story concludes, and one would wonder, if he succeeds, how will this affect the comic book world? The interactions between both characters and the cliffhanger are definitely more than enough to make me stick around for more. Spider-Man/Deadpool #1 was a great start to this series; it was funny, showcases amazing artwork, had great written dialogue between the two, and, saving the best for last, it features Spider-Man covered in feces and urine. What more can you want?
