Superman’s Appearance on “Supergirl” Confirmed, Casting in Progress

It’s a bird! It’s a plane! No it’s Warner Bros. TV’s official announcement of Superman’s appearance on The CW’s newly acquired Supergirl!

According to a statement from Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg, “Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!”

Fans were doubtful of Clark Kent’s appearance on the show, due to the sheer scale of character’s presence in the DC live-action film universe, where he is played by Henry Cavill. However, the Supergirl take on the Man of Steel will be separate from the current film universe. This separation of continuity comes to know surprise considering Supergirl and The CW’s Flash have crossed paths, and the end of Dawn of Justice confirmed an Ezra Miller casted Flash.

Despite previous doubts, Superman’s appearance is fitting. The iconic hero has acted as a lynchpin for an already established universe for the show; supporting characters such as Jimmy Olsen played by Mechad Brooks have hinted at him through dialogue.

In telling HitFix in October, Kreisberger has said, “It’s not the Christopher Reeve version. It’s not the Henry Cavill version. It’s a version of Superman and what he has gone through in the world that we live in and the the things that he’s faced and what’s happened to him via-a-vis how it reflects on Kara is all our invention.” Despite casting remaining a mystery, several fans and outlets (such as Comic Book Resources) have speculated that Tom Welling, who played young Clark Kent in Smallville for 10 years could possibly be up to don the cape. This is pure speculation, although Supergirl casting has shown dedication to the the character’s TV history by hiring actors involved from past Superman related roles. Some names being former Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman star Dean Cain or Laura Vandervoort from Smallville.

Season 2 of Supergirl lands of The CW this fall.
