Glenn Tilbrook may be from across the pond, but when he comes to New Jersey, Asbury Park is his home. Tonight, the lead singer of Squeeze, will perform at a new venue — The House of Independents on Cookman Avenue, which opened in the fall of 2015.

Tilbrook has been a yearly staple in the Asbury music scene taking with shows at Wonder Bar, and The Stone Pony over the years. If you’ve never seen him perform live, you’re truly missing out on seeing what the writers of this piece consider a brilliant artist.

Pop-Break was able to catch Tilbrook doing a live acoustic set in Asbury Park, and the man knows how to captivate a room. Whether it be through his ageless voice, his (and Chris Gifford’s) insightful lyrics, or his playful stage banter — you get a great feeling at a Tilbrook show. It’s fun. It’s creative. It’s a damn good time.

As we said back in 2013, “Tonight will be a chance to see one of pop’s most underrated triple threats. As a singer, Tilbrook’s crisp tenor has jumped easily from new wave to rock to country to R&B over Squeeze’s nearly four-decade career.

As a guitarist, he plays nimble, complex solos with ease, flashing his fingers from one end of the fretboard to the other in a manner of seconds.

And as a songwriter, Tilbrook and fellow Squeeze member Chris Difford have composed a string of well-constructed, memorable hits — ‘Pulling Mussels (From The Shell),’ ‘Tempted,’ ‘Black Coffee In Bed,’ ‘Hourglass.’ The band’s iconic greatest hits collection, Singles 45’s And Under, is a part of any serious music fan’s collection. They’ve even been called the Lennon & McCartney of their generation, with Difford handling the lyrics, and Tilbrook putting them to to music.”

Pop-Break recently caught up with Glenn Tilbrook to quickly talk about a few things before the show tonight.

One of 2015’s great musical stories was the reunion of Chris Difford and Glenn Tilbrook, the one-two creative punch of Squeeze. The band released a new record, Cradle to the Grave. When asked about the writing the album with Difford again, Tilbrook said, “[It was] like starting up a loved car that has been mothballed in a garage for many years.”

However, this wasn’t a one-off deal as Tilbrook confirmed he, Difford, and the gang from Squeeze are currently writing the new album as we speak.

So, what are you waiting for? New Squeeze music. Classic Squeeze music. Classic Tilbrook solo work. Tonight is a night to experience musical genius.
