Notable Openings This Weekend: Don’t Breathe, Mechanic: Resurrection
So this is how the summer ends? Yes, this weekend officially marks the end of summer movie season. We laughed (Sausage Party). We cried (Suicide Squad). We saw cats (Nine Lives). As we look at the two movies opening in wide release, we shouldn’t be surprised. This weekend always marks a notorious crap-fest. Just for a brief history lesson, the movies released at this time last year were War Room and No Escape with Owen Wilson. Yay. Get ready for more of the same these next few weeks, as the bridge from summer to Oscars is replaced with everybody watching Football. What better way to start the non-relevance than with a Jason Statham movie!
I’ve been a long time Jason Statham naysayer. He’s passable in an ensemble, but as a leading action star, I couldn’t care less. It sounds like everyone agrees with me. The last three wide released (over 2,000 theaters) Statham movies in which he was the leading role have averaged just over $7 Million opening weekend. I think we’ve seen enough. Studios making a Jason Statham movie is the equivalent to Lucy pulling that damn football away from Charlie Brown. They always try to hide him in the dregs of late August and January. It never goes unnoticed. Mechanic: Resurrection will flop. Also, pulling the “Resurrection” card in your sequel title? Wow. They flat out didn’t care.
What is there to say about Don’t Breathe? Much like Lights Out and The Shallows, it will do very well on a low budget. At some point in the summer we may just get horror movies and animation.
