The DC cinematic universe is about to get a little stranger. The Justice League Dark adaptation has confirmed Doug Liman as its director. The Edge of Tomorrow director was originally working on the Gambit solo film starring Channing Tatum. However sources indicate Liman has left that project and the split was mutual with the studio.
This upcoming DC adaptation, so far entitled “Dark Universe,” is based on the Peter Milligan comic created in 2011. The series centered around the DCU’s more supernatural and mystic heroes. The original team comprised of John Constantine, Zatanna, Deadman, Madame Xanadu, and Shade the Changing Man, and eventually accrued others. The comic, although short lived, received positive reception for reviving some of DC’s more obscure and cult-followed characters.
Plot details for the film are being tightly guarded and Warner Bros. has declined to comment. Variety has suggested the story may revolve around Constantine, Zatanna, Swamp Thing, and Etrigan the Demon.
The adaptation comes with no surprise and has been anticipated for some time. Famed horror and fantasy director Guillermo Del Toro was initially the director but had to ditch the project due to other work. Constantine was played by Keanu Reeves in the 2008 self-titled film. Matt Ryan later then helmed the infamous sorcerer from Liverpool in the NBC TV series which, to dismay of many fans, was cancelled. However he would later crossover into other DC television properties such as Arrow. The occult fueled super team is also receiving some cartoon treatment with an animated film expected some time this year.
