Trailer Tuesday

Release Date: May 26th, 2017

Starring: Dwayne Johnson, Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, Priyanka Chopra

Director: Seth Gordon (Horrible Bosses, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters)

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Baywatch was a really cheesy television show that took itself more seriously than it needed to, and focused a lot on attractive woman in red bathing suits running in slow motion. A ton of men loved the program, for obvious reasons. Much like 21 Jump Street, the film version based on the series aims to have a comedic tone running through it to liven up the proceedings. However, will it be a surprise hit similar to 21 Jump Street? -LJF

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Looking to capture the same lightning in a bottle as the 21 Jump Street movies, Baywatch will try and resurrect the 90s TV show for a modern movie-going audience. With Dwayne Johnson bringing his usual charms it will be interesting to see what direction they decide to take, considering the original premise of the show was already pretty campy and already the subject of countless parodies. – JTM

Rate the Trailer: 3 out of 5. Baywatch looks fun. There’s really not much to it. Efron and Johnson can play the humor card well, and the charm factor is undeniable. However, one would wonder if the the pairing of the two will pay off. That being said, both women and men who check this movie out will have plenty of eye candy. True to the Baywatch name. –LJF

Rate the Trailer: 2 out of 5. I knew they were angling for the same type of film as 21 Jump Street, but parts of this seems downright derivative of that series. The Jump Street movies also had the talent of Phil Lord and Chris Miller behind the camera, whereas now we get Seth Gordon (Identity Thief, Four Christmases) whose comedic output has been far less than stellar. You can’t have a movie like Baywatch without making boob jokes, but they come off as more groan worthy than anything. Even the presence of The Rock doesn’t bring with it the same charisma that I’ve come to expect from him. – JTM

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent. I feel like the movie in question would be a fun time at home. It really doesn’t require a trip to the cinema, especially in a summer where there’s going to be a lot of other movies calling my name. -LJF

Theater, Rent, Undecided, No Thanks? Undecided. This could just be a case of a trailer being cut to make it seem more like the Jump Street films, but the actual movie could turn out to be much more substantive. It’s a longshot, but I’m willing to see if the same critics who were surprised by 21 Jump Street warm up to this film as well. – JTM
