Trailer Tuesday

King Arthur

Release Date: May 12th, 2017

Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Katie McGrath, Jude Law, Eric Bana, Djimon Hounsou

Director: Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Sherlock Holmes, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels)

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Guy Ritchie has gained some director credentials with stuff like Snatch, Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels, and two solid Sherlock Holmes films. However, while Ritchie can present a stunning visual film, a few of his efforts have been less than stellar, including a Madonna flop and the recent Man from U.N.C.L.E. Now Ritchie aims for the medieval with King Arthur, which takes a page out of Sherlock Holmes‘ book, trying to mix an old tale with some modern day vibes. Will the mash up be a success?-LJF

Pre-Trailer Thoughts: Guy Ritchie made his bread and butter with gritty English crime dramas like Snatch and Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, so his career taking a turn towards more epic and larger spectacle films of late has been interesting. He’s already lined up to helm Disney’s live-action Aladdin remake, but before that he gives us his new take on the story of King Arthur. -JTM

Rate the Trailer: 2 out of 5. While it looks good aesthetically, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword just doesn’t seem to appear interesting. In addition, it doesn’t seem to help that this story has had constant adaptations. Maybe the director can do something to change it up, but I’m honestly not getting it here. -LJF

Rate the Trailer: 2 out of 5. The use of Led Zeppelin’s “Babe I’m Gonna Leave You” is just about the only thing that really make this trailer unique. Otherwise, all I saw was the usual medieval and fantasy cliches dressed up with some nice looking CGI. The Arthurian legend is one of the oldest English stories, and nothing this version brings to the table is really a game changer. Not even a cast that includes Jude Law, Djimon Hounsou, and Charlie Hunnam as Arthur himself can get me pumped for this at all. – JTM

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? No Thanks. I cannot see myself sitting through this movie, and I had a good time with both Sherlock Holmes outings. Pass. -LJF

Theater, Rent, No Thanks, Undecided? Rent. Fantasy/medieval movies have to really be something special to get me interested and this didn’t do the trick. The trailer did nothing to really excite me, but I have enough interest in Guy Ritchie to give it a shot later on down the line when it’s streaming. – JTM
